How to Use

Dosage

The ring releases two hormones daily for three weeks.

Method

Insert the ring into your vagina and leave it for 3 full weeks. After 3 weeks, remove it and take a 1-week break. Then, insert a new ring.

Important

The ring is designed to be used continuously for 3 weeks, releasing hormones steadily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Abdominal pain, nausea
  • Vaginal yeast infections, vaginal discomfort from ring, genital itching, vaginal discharge
  • Headache or migraine
  • Depressed mood, decreased sex drive
  • Breast pain, pelvic pain, painful periods
  • Acne
  • Weight gain
  • Ring coming out of the vagina
RARE
  • Blood clots in veins or arteries (e.g., in legs, lungs, heart attack, stroke, mini-stroke, or in the liver, abdomen, kidneys, or eye)
  • Breast milk secretion

Important Warnings

  • NuvaRing increases your risk of blood clots. Seek medical help immediately if you notice symptoms like leg swelling, chest pain, or sudden shortness of breath.
  • NuvaRing does not protect against HIV (AIDS) or other sexually transmitted infections.
  • Do not use NuvaRing if you have certain serious medical conditions, such as a history of blood clots, heart attack, stroke, severe liver disease, or certain cancers.
  • If you experience severe allergic reactions like swelling of your face, tongue, or throat, remove the ring and seek immediate medical attention.
  • Some women using hormonal contraception, including NuvaRing, have reported depression. Contact your doctor if you experience mood changes or symptoms of depression.

  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines or herbal remedies you are taking, as they can affect how NuvaRing works.
  • If your NuvaRing breaks, remove it immediately and insert a new one as soon as possible, using an additional barrier method (like a male condom) for the next 7 days.
