Novastan is a medicine that helps prevent harmful blood clots from forming, and it is used if you have type II heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT).

How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the exact dose and how long you need to take it, based on your individual needs.

Method

A doctor or nurse will always give Novastan to you as a continuous infusion directly into a vein.

Important

Your doctor will determine the maximum daily dose for you.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Bleeding or bruising on the skin and mucous membranes, including small bleeds (purpura).
  • Nausea (feeling sick).
  • Anemia (low red blood cell count).
  • Blood clots.
RARE
  • Infections, such as urinary tract infections.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Low blood sugar or sodium levels.
  • Confusion, dizziness, fainting, headache.
  • Stroke.
  • Muscle problems, speech problems, vision problems, deafness.
  • Heart attack, fluid around the heart, abnormal heart rhythm, fast heart rate.
  • Low or high blood pressure.
  • Vein inflammation.
  • Shock.
  • Breathing difficulties, fluid around the lungs, hiccups, bloody coughs.
  • Constipation, diarrhea, stomach inflammation, difficulty swallowing, tongue problems, bloody vomit or stools.
  • Changes in liver function, yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice), kidney failure.
  • Rash, hives, itching, increased sweating, hair loss.
  • Muscle weakness, muscle pain, fever, pain, fatigue.
  • Injection site reactions, leg swelling, increased wound drainage.
  • Abnormal laboratory test results.
  • Bleeding in the brain.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Novastan if you have uncontrolled bleeding.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to argatroban or any other ingredient in Novastan.
  • Do not use this medicine if you have severe liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have an increased risk of bleeding or have recently received other blood-thinning medicines.
  • This medicine is not recommended for children or adolescents, as the dose has not yet been established.

  • Do not drive or operate machinery during treatment, as the medicine contains alcohol.
  • Tell your doctor if you have hereditary fructose intolerance, as Novastan contains sorbitol.
