Norvasc is a medicine that treats high blood pressure and certain types of chest pain (angina) by relaxing blood vessels and improving blood flow to the heart.

How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 5 mg once daily. For children (6-17 years), the starting dose is 2.5 mg once daily.

Method

Take the tablet with water, at the same time each day, with or without food. Do not take with grapefruit juice.

Important

For adults, the maximum dose is 10 mg once daily. For children (6-17 years), the maximum dose is 5 mg once daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Swelling, especially of the ankles
  • Headache, dizziness, drowsiness (especially at the start of treatment)
  • Palpitations (feeling your heart beat), flushing
  • Stomach pain, nausea
  • Changes in bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation, indigestion)
  • Tiredness, weakness
  • Vision problems, double vision
  • Muscle cramps
RARE
  • Mood changes, anxiety, depression, insomnia
  • Tremors, changes in taste, fainting
  • Numbness or tingling in limbs, loss of pain sensation
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Low blood pressure
  • Runny nose, sneezing (due to nasal inflammation)
  • Cough
  • Dry mouth, vomiting
  • Hair loss, increased sweating, itchy skin, red patches on skin, skin discoloration
  • Urination problems, increased need to urinate at night, increased frequency
  • Erectile dysfunction, breast pain or enlargement in men
  • Pain, feeling unwell
  • Joint or muscle pain, back pain
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Confusion
  • Decreased white blood cells or platelets, which can lead to easy bruising or bleeding
  • High blood sugar
  • Nerve disorder causing muscle weakness, tingling or numbness
  • Swollen or bleeding gums
  • Abdominal swelling (gastritis)
  • Liver problems (inflammation of the liver, yellow skin, high liver enzymes that may affect lab tests)
  • Increased muscle stiffness
  • Blood vessel inflammation, often with skin rash
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Movement disorders like stiffness, tremors, mask-like face, slow movements, and shuffling gait

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Norvasc if you are allergic to amlodipine or any other ingredient, or to other calcium channel blockers.
  • Do not take Norvasc if you have very low blood pressure.
  • Do not take Norvasc if you have severe heart problems like narrowing of the aorta, cardiogenic shock, or heart failure after a heart attack.
  • Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while taking Norvasc.
  • This medicine can make you feel sick, dizzy, tired, or give you a headache. If this happens, do not drive or use machines and contact your doctor immediately.

  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience sudden wheezing, chest pain, shortness of breath, swelling of eyelids, face, lips, tongue, or throat, severe skin reactions (like widespread rash, hives, peeling skin), heart attack, unusual heartbeat, or inflammation of the pancreas (severe stomach and back pain).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A
