How to Use

Dosage

Apply one Norspan patch to your skin.

Method

Apply the patch to clean, dry skin on an area like the upper arm or chest. Press it firmly for about 30 seconds to make sure it sticks well, then change it every seven days, preferably at the same time of day.

Important

Do not use more than two patches at the same time. The maximum total dose is 40 micrograms per hour.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache, dizziness, drowsiness
  • Constipation, feeling sick or throwing up
  • Itching skin
  • Redness, rash, itching, or swelling where the patch is applied
  • Loss of appetite
  • Feeling confused, sad, anxious, nervous, shaky, or having trouble sleeping
  • Shortness of breath
  • Stomach pain or discomfort, diarrhea, indigestion, dry mouth
  • Sweating, skin rash
  • Tiredness, unusual weakness, muscle weakness, swollen hands, ankles, or feet
RARE
  • Feeling restless, overly happy, seeing things that aren't there (hallucinations), nightmares, less interest in sex, or aggression
  • Changes in taste, difficulty speaking, less feeling of pain or touch, tingling or numbness
  • Memory loss, migraine, fainting, or trouble concentrating and coordinating movements
  • Dry eyes, blurred vision
  • Ringing or buzzing in ears, feeling dizzy or a spinning sensation
  • High or low blood pressure, chest pain, or a fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Cough, hiccups, or wheezing
  • Weight loss, dry skin
  • Muscle spasms, aches and pains
  • Difficulty starting to urinate or inability to empty the bladder completely
  • Fever
  • Increased risk of falls or other accidents
  • Withdrawal symptoms like agitation, anxiety, sweating, or shaking when stopping treatment
  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Inflammation of the gut lining, with symptoms such as fever, vomiting, and stomach pain
  • Increased sensitivity to pain
  • Colic-like stomach pain or discomfort
  • Feeling detached from yourself
  • Withdrawal symptoms in babies born to mothers who used Norspan during pregnancy, such as high-pitched crying, irritability, shaking, feeding problems, sweating, and poor weight gain
  • Needing higher doses of this medicine for the same pain relief (tolerance)
  • Skin rash with inflammation and a possible burning sensation (contact dermatitis), or changes in skin color

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to buprenorphine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe breathing problems.
  • Do not use if you have a history of drug dependence.
  • Do not use if you are taking or have taken MAO inhibitors (a type of antidepressant) in the last two weeks.
  • If you are taking antidepressants, tell your doctor, as combining them with Norspan can cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome.

  • Norspan can cause breathing problems during sleep, like sleep apnea (pauses in breathing) or low oxygen levels. Tell your doctor if you experience these.
  • Skin reactions at the patch site, such as redness, swelling, itching, rash, or small blisters, are common. Contact your doctor if they are severe or spread.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel dizzy, drowsy, or have blurred vision, and for 24 hours after removing the patch.
