Noritren is a medicine for depression that helps correct chemical imbalances in the brain causing symptoms of depression.

How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 25 mg two or three times a day. Your doctor may slowly increase the dose to 50 mg three times a day.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water. Do not chew them. At the start of treatment, usually take 2-3 separate doses during the day. For long-term use, you can take one dose in the morning.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 150 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Sweating
  • Trembling hands
  • Headache
  • Dizziness, especially when standing up (due to low blood pressure)
  • Blurred vision
  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Numbness or tingling in arms and legs
  • Clumsiness or poor coordination
  • Widened pupils
  • Confusion (more common in older people)
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Less sexual desire
  • Changes in taste
  • Weight gain
  • Changes in the heart's electrical activity (seen on ECG)
  • Erection problems in men
  • Feeling tired
RARE
  • Rash, itching, swelling of face and tongue
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Seizures
  • Mood changes, such as increased anxiety or agitation
  • Sleeplessness, nightmares
  • Diarrhea, vomiting
  • High blood pressure
  • Trouble urinating (more common in older men)
  • Hair loss
  • Skin sensitive to sunlight
  • Loss of appetite
  • Severe confusion (delirium, especially in older people), hallucinations
  • Swollen salivary glands
  • Weight loss
  • Breast enlargement
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Severe constipation, bloated stomach, fever, and vomiting (may be due to paralyzed gut)
  • Yellow skin and whites of eyes (a sign of liver problems)
  • Bruises, bleeding, paleness, sore throat, and fever (signs of blood problems)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Noritren if you are allergic to nortriptylin or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not take if you have recently had a heart attack, serious heart rhythm issues, or coronary artery disease.
  • Do not take with certain other antidepressants called MAO inhibitors; consult your doctor for the necessary waiting period.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have epilepsy, trouble urinating, an enlarged prostate, an overactive thyroid, liver disease, high eye pressure (glaucoma), diabetes, or Brugada syndrome.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, seek immediate medical help.

  • Using this medicine with certain others can lead to a serious condition called serotonin syndrome.
  • Avoid alcohol, as it can increase drowsiness and Noritren's calming effect.
  • Do not drive or use machines if Noritren makes you dizzy, drowsy, or causes blurred vision.
  • This medicine contains lactose; if you have a sugar intolerance, consult your doctor.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. Serotonergic. Risk of QT prolongation. Significant adverse effects include confusion, cognitive impairment, arrhythmias and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls. Consider the numerous potential interactions.
