How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on your weight, age, and condition; it's usually 0.025–0.067 mg/kg/day for children and 0.1–0.5 mg/day to start for adults.

Method

Inject your daily dose under the skin (subcutaneously) every evening before going to bed.

Important

The usual maximum daily dose is 1.0 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Swelling of hands and feet due to fluid retention.
  • Headache.
  • Tingling and numbness or pain mainly in the fingers.
  • Joint pain and stiffness, muscle pain.
RARE
  • Rash, wheezing, swelling of eyelids, face or lips, and fainting (signs of an allergic reaction).
  • Severe headache, vision problems, nausea, and vomiting (signs of increased pressure in the brain).
  • Decrease in blood thyroxine level.
  • Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar).
  • Redness, itching, and pain at the injection site.
  • Breast enlargement (gynecomastia).
  • Type 2 diabetes.
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome (tingling and pain in fingers and hands).
  • Muscle stiffness.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to somatropin, phenol, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have had a kidney transplant.
  • Do not use if you have active cancer; tumors must not be active and cancer treatment must be finished before starting treatment.
  • Do not use if you have an acute, critical condition requiring intensive care, such as open-heart surgery, abdominal surgery, severe trauma, or acute respiratory failure.
  • Do not use if your growth has stopped (growth plates are closed) and you do not have growth hormone deficiency.
