How to Use

Dosage

For angina attacks, 2.5–10 mg. For preventing angina, start with 5–10 mg, then possibly 20–40 mg 3 or 4 times daily. For heart failure, 100–160 mg per day in 2–3 doses.

Method

For angina attacks, chew the tablet and let it dissolve in your mouth, preferably while sitting or lying down. For prevention or heart failure, swallow tablets whole. Tablets can be divided.

Important

The maximum daily dose is typically 160 mg.

  • Facial flushing, circulation problems

  • Slow heartbeat, temporary heart conduction problems
  • Methemoglobinemia (a rare blood disorder)
  • Heartburn
  • Severe skin reactions

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Nitrosid if you are allergic to isosorbide dinitrate, other similar medicines (nitrates), or any other ingredient.
  • Do not take if you have very low blood pressure, certain severe heart valve or heart muscle diseases, heart tamponade, cardiogenic shock, or acute circulation problems.
  • Do not take if you have severe untreated anemia or high pressure inside your head.
  • Do not take if you are taking or have recently taken medicines for erection problems (like sildenafil, vardenafil, or tadalafil), as this can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
  • Do not take if you are taking riociguat (a medicine for high blood pressure in the lungs).

  • Talk to your doctor before taking Nitrosid if you have recently had a heart attack, heart failure, lung disease causing low oxygen, or other illnesses/allergies. This medicine can also affect blood pressure or eye pressure if you have glaucoma.
  • Avoid alcohol, as it can lower your blood pressure too much when combined with Nitrosid.
  • Nitrosid is not recommended for children as its safety and effectiveness have not been proven.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Consider reduced blood pressure and the risk of fainting due to orthostatic hypotonia. Need for long-acting product should be assessed regularly. (updated 19.5.2025)
