How to Use

Dosage

For adults, usually 75 mg twice a day for acute infections, or 75 mg once in the evening for long-term infections or prevention. For children over 3 months, 3-5 mg/kg per day in 2-4 doses for acute infections, or 1-2 mg/kg once in the evening for long-term infections or prevention.

Method

Take tablets by mouth exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you.

Important

For adults, the highest dose is 150 mg per day. For children over 3 months, the maximum is 5 mg/kg per day. Children under 3 months should not use this medicine.

  • Liver inflammation or damage
  • Higher values in liver tests
  • Inflammation of the food pipe (esophagus)
  • Bowel blockage
  • Changes in blood cells
  • Strong allergic reactions
  • A disease affecting the skin and connective tissues (systemic lupus erythematosus)
  • Fever caused by the medicine
  • Nerve damage in arms or legs (peripheral neuropathy)
  • Paralysis of eye muscles
  • Paralysis of facial nerves
  • Blockage or scarring in lung airways (bronchiolitis, pulmonary fibrosis)
  • Inflammation of the pancreas
  • Inflammation of salivary glands
  • Crystals forming in urine
  • Temporary hair loss
  • Inflammation of small blood vessel walls (vasculitis)
  • Kidney inflammation that may lead to kidney failure
  • Very severe skin reactions (like DRESS and Stevens-Johnson syndrome)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to nitrofurantoin, vitamin C, or any other part of this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have very bad kidney problems.
  • Do not use if you have certain rare blood disorders called porphyria or G6PD deficiency.
  • Do not use if you are in the last weeks of pregnancy (weeks 38-42), are giving birth, or if labor is about to start.
  • Do not use for babies under 3 months old.

  • Stop taking this medicine and call your doctor right away if you have trouble breathing, cough, fever, or chest pain. These could be signs of a serious lung problem.
  • Talk to your doctor if you feel very tired, your skin or eyes turn yellow, you have itching, a rash, joint pain, stomach problems, nausea, vomiting, lose your appetite, your urine is dark, or your stool is pale. These could be signs of liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have lung, liver, or nerve problems, any allergies, conditions that can cause nerve damage (like anemia, diabetes, or lack of B vitamins), or have had kidney stones.
  • If you know you cannot handle certain sugars, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
