How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 30 mg once a day. Your doctor may change your dose if needed. Elderly patients and those with liver problems might need a lower dose. Always follow your doctor's instructions.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with liquid. Do not crush, chew, or split the tablets. Do not take with grapefruit juice.

Important

Your doctor will decide your maximum daily dose. Do not take more than your doctor prescribes.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • facial flushing
  • headache
  • dizziness
  • general feeling of being unwell
  • swelling (in hands and feet)
  • constipation
  • fast heartbeat
  • low blood pressure when standing up
RARE
  • irregular heartbeat, palpitations, chest pain (not always)
  • heartburn, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, bowel problems (like blockage or gas)
  • insomnia, nervousness, anxiety, tremors, depression, impaired sensation, drowsiness
  • allergic reactions, skin swelling, redness, itching, rash, hives, skin sensitivity to sunlight, yellowing (of skin or eyes)
  • muscle cramps, joint swelling, joint pain, muscle pain, eye pain
  • painful or difficult urination, increased need to urinate, erectile dysfunction, breast growth in men
  • vision problems, nosebleeds, stuffy nose, fever
  • anemia, high blood sugar, fluid in the lungs, severe allergic reactions (like shock)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to nifedipine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have recently had a heart attack, severe heart failure, or unstable chest pain (angina).
  • Do not use if you have very low blood pressure.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines, especially rifampicin (a medicine for tuberculosis).
  • Do not use Nifedipin Alternova if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor tells you it is absolutely necessary.

  • This medicine may affect your ability to drive or use machines, especially when you start treatment, if your dose changes, or with alcohol.
  • Nifedipin Alternova is not recommended for children or teenagers under 18 years of age.
  • Do not use if you have a special type of bowel diversion (Kock's pouch) or if your bowel has a narrowing or blockage.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Applies to long-acting preparations. Significant adverse effects include ankle oedema and orthostatic hypotension. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 17.2.2025)
