How to Use

Dosage

Chew one gum when you feel like smoking, typically one gum every 1-2 hours at the start of treatment. 8-12 gums per day is usually enough.

Method

Do not swallow the gum. Chew one piece slowly until the taste becomes strong, then place it between your cheek and gum. Chew again when the taste fades. Continue this process for about 30 minutes. Avoid coffee, acidic drinks, and soft drinks 15 minutes before chewing, and do not eat or drink while the gum is in your mouth.

Important

For 2 mg gum, maximum 24 pieces per day. For 4 mg gum, maximum 15 pieces per day. Do not use more than one piece per hour.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to nicotine or any other ingredient in this medicine, or if you do not smoke.
  • Talk to your doctor before use if you have any heart problems (like a recent heart attack, irregular heartbeat, heart failure, or chest pain), have had a stroke, or have high blood pressure or circulatory problems. If your heart problems worsen, reduce or stop use.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have diabetes (monitor blood sugar more often, as medicine needs may change), an overactive thyroid, an adrenal gland tumor, kidney or liver problems, inflammation of the esophagus, mouth, throat, gastritis, or a stomach ulcer, or have had epilepsy/seizures.
  • If you have jaw problems or dentures, chewing gum might be difficult or dislodge fillings/implants. Consider other nicotine replacement therapies.
  • Do not smoke while using Nicotinell gum, as this can lead to very high nicotine levels and make you feel sick.

  • Keep this medicine out of sight and reach of children. Adult doses can be poisonous and potentially deadly to small children. Nicotinell should not be used by adolescents aged 12-17 without a healthcare professional's prescription, and never by children under 12 years.
  • If you are pregnant, it is very important to stop smoking. The best option is to quit without nicotine-containing medicines. If you cannot, use Nicotinell only after talking to a healthcare professional.
  • Avoid Nicotinell while breastfeeding as nicotine passes into breast milk and can affect your baby. If recommended by a healthcare professional, take the gum immediately after feeding or at least two hours before the next feed.
  • If you are using Nicotinell Licorice gum and cannot tolerate licorice, large or long-term use can cause high blood pressure and irregular heartbeat.
