How to Use

Dosage

Take one piece of gum when you feel like smoking. At the start of treatment, a new piece of gum is usually needed every 1–2 hours. Typically, 8–12 pieces of gum per day are enough.

Method

Do not swallow the gum. Chew slowly until the taste is strong. Place the gum between your cheek and gum. Chew again when the taste fades. Continue this for about 30 minutes. Avoid coffee, acidic or soft drinks 15 minutes before chewing the gum or while chewing.

Important

Do not use more than 24 pieces of 2 mg gum or 15 pieces of 4 mg gum per day. Do not use more than one piece per hour.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea
  • Sore mouth lining, uncomfortable feeling in the mouth, sore throat, pain in mouth, throat and jaw muscles
  • Vomiting, stomach discomfort, stomach pain, diarrhea, indigestion/heartburn, flatulence, constipation, hiccups, belching
  • Dizziness, headache, insomnia, cough, dry mouth
RARE
  • Heart palpitations
  • Red skin rash (erythema) and itchy rash with bumps (hives)
  • Severe allergic reactions with swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing, hives
  • Heart rhythm disturbances
  • Increased salivation, difficulty swallowing, tremors, mouth ulcers, shortness of breath, weakness, fatigue, generally feeling unwell, flu-like symptoms

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Nicotinell chewing gum if you are allergic to nicotine or any other ingredient in this medicine, or if you are not a smoker.
  • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Nicotinell if you have heart problems (e.g., heart attack, irregular heartbeat, heart failure, chest pain), or if you have had a stroke, high blood pressure, or circulation problems.
  • Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have diabetes, overactive thyroid, adrenal gland tumour, kidney or liver problems, inflammation of the esophagus or stomach, stomach ulcer, or epilepsy.
  • If you have jaw joint problems or wear dentures, chewing gum might be difficult and could dislodge fillings or implants. Consider other nicotine replacement therapies.
  • Do not smoke while using Nicotinell gum, as this can lead to very high nicotine levels and make you feel sick.

  • Keep Nicotinell out of reach and sight of children, as even small amounts of nicotine can be dangerous or even fatal for young children. Children under 12 should not use this gum. Teenagers (12-17) should only use it if a healthcare professional has prescribed it.
  • Avoid coffee, acidic drinks, and soft drinks 15 minutes before chewing Nicotinell gum, as they can reduce nicotine absorption. Do not eat or drink while the gum is in your mouth.
  • It is very important to stop smoking during pregnancy. If you cannot quit without help, use Nicotinell only after talking to a healthcare professional.
  • Avoid using Nicotinell while breastfeeding, as nicotine passes into breast milk. If a healthcare professional recommends it, use the gum right after breastfeeding or at least two hours before the next feeding.
  • If you don't tolerate liquorice, large or prolonged use of Nicotinell Liquorice gum may cause high blood pressure or irregular heartbeat.
