How to Use

Dosage

If you smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day, start with Nicotinell 21 mg/24 hours. If you smoke 20 or fewer cigarettes a day, start with Nicotinell 14 mg/24 hours.

Method

Apply one patch to a clean, dry, hairless, healthy skin area on your chest, back, upper arm, or hip. Press the patch firmly onto your skin for 10-20 seconds.

Important

Do not use Nicotinell patches for more than 3 months in total. Use only one patch at a time per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Skin reactions at the patch site (redness, itching, burning, tingling) that usually disappear when the patch is removed.
  • Sleep problems, including trouble sleeping or strange dreams.
  • Headache.
  • Feeling sick (nausea), dizziness, or throwing up (vomiting).
  • Feeling nervous or shaky (tremor).
  • Fast heartbeat (palpitations).
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Sore throat or swelling in the throat.
  • Cough.
  • Stomach problems (stomach ache, diarrhea, dry mouth, constipation).
  • More sweating.
  • Skin rash where the patch was (contact dermatitis).
  • Joint or muscle pain.
  • Feeling tired or weak.
RARE
  • Very fast heartbeat (tachycardia).
  • Feeling generally unwell or flu-like symptoms.
  • Irregular heartbeat.
  • Skin becomes sensitive to light.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to nicotine or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • This medicine is not for non-smokers.
  • Do not use if you have recently had a heart attack, stroke, or severe irregular heartbeat, unless your doctor tells you to.
  • If you have diabetes, check your blood sugar more often as your insulin or medicine needs might change.
  • If you have kidney or liver problems.

  • If you have ever had epileptic seizures.
  • If you have stomach or duodenal ulcers, or inflammation of the esophagus, as nicotine replacement can worsen symptoms.
  • Never smoke while using Nicotinell, as it can lead to very high nicotine levels and make you feel sick.
  • Used patches still contain nicotine and are harmful to children. Keep all medicine out of sight and reach of children.
  • Do not use the patch during an MRI scan, as the aluminum in the patch can heat up and cause burns.
  • Persons under 18 years should not use Nicotinell without a healthcare professional's recommendation.
  • If you are pregnant, nicotine can harm your baby. Do not use Nicotinell during pregnancy unless you cannot stop smoking without nicotine replacement.
  • If you are breastfeeding, nicotine can affect your baby. Do not use Nicotinell during breastfeeding unless you cannot stop smoking without nicotine replacement; oral forms are preferred.
