How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the doctor will usually give 0.4 to 2 mg of naloxone into a vein. More doses might be given every 2-3 minutes if needed.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give Nexodal as a shot into a vein or muscle, or as a drip into a vein. Shots into a muscle are only used if a vein shot is not possible.

Important

Your doctor will decide how long you need to take this medicine and what your maximum daily dose should be.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling sick or unwell
  • Dizziness, headache, fast heartbeat, low or high blood pressure, throwing up, pain after surgery
RARE
  • Shivers, sweating, irregular or slow heartbeat, diarrhea, dry mouth, fast and deep breathing, irritation where the shot was given in a vein
  • Seizures, feeling nervous
  • Very fast or uneven heartbeat, heart stopping, fluid in the lungs, allergic reactions (like hives, runny nose, trouble breathing, swelling of the face/throat), severe allergic shock, skin rash

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Nexodal if you are allergic to naloxone or any other part of this medicine.
  • If you are very used to opioids (painkillers) or have taken large amounts, you might get withdrawal symptoms. These can include high blood pressure, a fast heartbeat, serious trouble breathing, or your heart stopping.
  • If Nexodal is given to a baby whose mother used opioids, the baby might have sudden withdrawal symptoms.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart or blood circulation problems. Side effects like high or low blood pressure, fast heartbeat, or serious breathing problems could happen more easily.
  • If you are taking buprenorphine for pain, naloxone might not work as well.

  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a baby, ask your doctor for advice before using this medicine. Do not breastfeed for 24 hours after taking this medicine.
  • Do not drive or use machines for at least 24 hours after getting Nexodal. The effects of the opioids might come back.
