How to Use

Dosage

For the first 14 days, take one 200 mg nevirapine tablet once daily. After 14 days, the usual dose is one 400 mg Nevirapine Viatris prolonged-release tablet once daily.

Method

Take the prolonged-release tablets whole with liquid, do not chew or crush them. You can take them with or without food. Always take this medicine with at least two other anti-HIV medicines.

Important

The maximum daily dose for maintenance is one 400 mg prolonged-release tablet.

RARE
  • Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity)
  • Allergic reaction with rash, facial swelling, breathing difficulties (bronchospasm) or severe allergic shock (anaphylaxis)
  • Drug-induced reaction with systemic symptoms (e.g., increased eosinophils in blood)
  • Rapidly progressing and severe liver inflammation (fulminant hepatitis)
  • Severe and life-threatening rashes (Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Yellow skin (jaundice)
  • Hives (urticaria)
  • Swelling under the skin (angioedema)
  • Muscle pain
  • Joint pain
  • Decreased white blood cell count (granulocytopenia)
  • Decreased blood phosphate levels
  • High blood pressure
  • Decreased red blood cell count (anemia)
  • Decreased platelet count
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Decreased or abnormal skin sensation

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to nevirapine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you develop a severe rash or any allergic reactions like fever, blisters, mouth sores, eye inflammation, swelling (face or general), breathing problems, muscle or joint pain, general feeling of illness, stomach pain, or liver inflammation (hepatitis). These could be life-threatening.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver disease or if you previously stopped nevirapine treatment due to changes in liver function.
  • Do not take if you are using St. John's wort, as it can stop this medicine from working properly.
  • During the first 18 weeks of treatment, you and your doctor must watch for signs of liver or skin reactions, which can be severe and even life-threatening. The risk is highest during the first 6 weeks.

  • If you experience symptoms of liver damage, such as loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, yellow skin, or stomach pain, stop taking Nevirapine Viatris and contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you use oral contraceptives (e.g., birth control pills) or other hormonal birth control methods during nevirapine treatment, you must also use a barrier method (e.g., condoms) to prevent pregnancy and HIV transmission.
