How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on your illness, its severity, and your age. Treatment usually starts with a small dose, which is gradually increased.

Method

Take the tablet with liquid (e.g., half a glass of water). You can take it with or after a meal, or on an empty stomach. Swallow the tablet whole or divided; do not chew or crush it.

Important

The maximum daily dose is determined by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Reduced number of white blood cells (leukopenia).
  • Feeling dizzy, problems with muscle coordination (ataxia), sleepiness, tiredness.
  • Nausea, vomiting.
  • Increased liver enzyme values (gamma-GT value).
  • Allergic skin inflammation, hives.
  • Reduced number of platelets (thrombocytopenia), increased number of certain white blood cells (eosinophilia).
  • Swelling, excess fluid in the body, weight gain, low sodium levels in the blood, which can rarely lead to 'water intoxication' with drowsiness, vomiting, headache, confusion, and neurological problems.
  • Headache.
  • Double vision, decreased visual acuity, blurred vision.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Abnormal involuntary movements (e.g., tremor, muscle twitching), eye twitching (nystagmus).
  • Diarrhea, constipation.
  • Flaky skin inflammation, redness over the body.
RARE
  • Severe lack of specific white blood cells, or a complete lack of all blood cells (aplastic anemia).
  • Life-threatening allergic reactions, sudden local swelling of the skin.
  • Breast growth in men, milk discharge in women, thyroid problems, increased prolactin.
  • Activation of psychosis, severe neurological syndrome (muscle stiffness, trouble swallowing, fever, blood pressure changes), confusion, aggression.
  • Clouding of the eye lens (cataract), eye inflammation (conjunctivitis), hearing problems, ringing in ears, changes in pitch perception.
  • Slow heart rate, irregular heartbeat, heart block, heart failure, worsening of coronary artery disease.
  • Fainting due to circulation problems, vein inflammation (thrombophlebitis), increased risk of blood clots.
  • Lung hypersensitivity reactions with fever, shortness of breath, lung inflammation.
  • Inflammation of the tongue or mouth, pancreatitis, liver inflammation or failure.
  • Kidney failure, kidney inflammation, reduced kidney function (blood in urine, reduced urine output, increased urea), changes in urination frequency, urine retention.
  • Sexual disorders, erectile dysfunction, reduced sperm count and/or mobility.
  • Falls due to dizziness, sleepiness, low blood pressure, or confusion.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to carbamazepine, similar antidepressants, or any other ingredients in Neurotol.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had severe heart, liver, or kidney problems.
  • Inform your doctor if you have or have had blood disorders or bone marrow problems.
  • If you develop a rash or other skin problems, stop taking this medicine immediately and contact your doctor. Serious skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis require urgent medical attention.
  • A small number of people taking anti-epileptic medicines have had thoughts of harming themselves or committing suicide. If you have these thoughts, contact your doctor immediately.

  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine, as it can harm your baby.
  • Do not stop taking Neurotol suddenly without talking to your doctor, as this can increase seizures.
  • Long-term use of Neurotol can lead to vitamin D deficiency and weaken bones. Ensure you get enough vitamin D during treatment.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Hyponatraemia is a common adverse effect. Numerous potential adverse effects, such as hematological changes and risk of hepatic injury. May increase the need for a vitamin D supplement. Consider the numerous potential and significant interactions before starting and discontinuing the use. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 10.11.2025)
