How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your correct dose. Typically, treatment starts with 300–900 mg per day, and the dose is gradually increased. For children, the dose is based on weight, starting low and increasing slowly.

Method

Take the capsules or tablets by mouth, always with plenty of water. You can take the medicine with or without food. Usually, divide the daily dose into three parts: morning, afternoon, and evening. Tablets can be divided.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults and adolescents is 3600 mg. For children, the dose is based on weight, up to 25-35 mg/kg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Virus infection
  • Drowsiness, dizziness, lack of coordination
  • Fatigue, fever
  • Pneumonia, respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, ear infections, or other infections
  • Low white blood cell count
  • Loss of appetite, increased appetite
  • Hostility, confusion, mood swings, depression, anxiety, nervousness, difficulty thinking
  • Convulsions, jerky movements, speech problems, memory loss, tremors, insomnia, headache, skin sensitivity, numbness (decreased sensation), coordination problems, unusual eye movements, increased/decreased or absent reflexes
  • Blurred vision, double vision
  • Vertigo (spinning sensation)
  • High blood pressure, flushing (redness of face), or widening of blood vessels
  • Breathing difficulties, bronchitis, sore throat, cough, dry nasal membranes
  • Vomiting, nausea, dental problems, gingivitis (gum inflammation), diarrhea, stomach pain, indigestion, constipation, dry mouth/throat, flatulence
  • Facial swelling, bruising, rash, itching, acne
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, back pain, muscle twitching
  • Erectile dysfunction (impotence)
  • Swelling of legs and arms, difficulty walking, weakness, pain, general feeling of illness, flu-like symptoms
  • Weight gain
  • Accidental injury, fracture, abrasion
  • Aggressive behavior and jerky movements (in children)
RARE
  • Agitation (restlessness and involuntary movements)
  • Allergic reactions, such as hives
  • Reduced movement
  • Heart palpitations
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Swelling that can also include face, trunk, and limbs
  • Abnormal blood test results indicating liver problems
  • Impaired mental performance
  • Falls
  • Elevated blood sugar (most common in diabetics)
  • Reduced blood sugar (most common in diabetics)
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Respiratory problems, shallow breathing (respiratory depression)
  • Decreased platelet count (cells important for blood clotting)
  • Suicidal thoughts, hallucinations
  • Abnormal movements, such as writhing, twitching, and stiffness
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Yellowing of skin and whites of eyes (jaundice), liver inflammation
  • Acute kidney failure, incontinence
  • Increased breast tissue, breast enlargement
  • Withdrawal symptoms after stopping treatment (e.g., anxiety, insomnia, nausea, pain, sweating), chest pain
  • Muscle tissue breakdown (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Changes in blood test results (increased creatine phosphokinase)
  • Sexual dysfunction including orgasm disorder, delayed ejaculation
  • Low sodium in blood
  • Anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction with breathing difficulties, swelling of lips, throat, and tongue, and low blood pressure)
  • Development of dependence on Neurontin (drug dependence)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Neurontin if you are allergic to gabapentin or any other ingredients in the medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems or are on dialysis, as your dose may need to be adjusted.
  • If you experience stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting, contact your doctor immediately, as these could be signs of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).
  • If you have difficulty breathing, seek medical help immediately.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of addiction, as Neurontin can cause dependence.

  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you develop a severe rash, such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or DRESS syndrome, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you experience muscle weakness, tenderness, or pain, especially with a fever, contact your doctor immediately, as this could be a sign of serious muscle damage.
  • If you experience severe allergic symptoms, such as rash, fever, swelling, or yellowing of the skin/eyes, seek immediate medical attention.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly; always talk to your doctor first.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Note especially central nervous system adverse effects. Take the several interactions in the absorption phase into account. (updated 14.4.2025)
