How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will set your dose. It usually starts at 300-900 mg per day and is slowly increased.

Method

Swallow Neurontin capsules or tablets whole with plenty of water. Tablets can be split in half. Keep taking it until your doctor tells you to stop.

Important

The most you can take is 3600 mg per day, split into three doses: one in the morning, one in the afternoon, and one in the evening.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Viral infection
  • Drowsiness, dizziness, lack of coordination
  • Fatigue, fever
RARE
  • Low blood sugar (most common in diabetics)
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Breathing difficulties, shallow breathing

Important Warnings

  • Stop taking Neurontin and get urgent medical help if you get red, target-like spots or rashes with blisters, peeling skin, or sores in your mouth, throat, nose, genitals, or eyes. These can be signs of serious skin reactions.
  • Get urgent medical help if you have a widespread rash, high fever, and swollen lymph nodes. These could be signs of a severe allergic reaction (DRESS syndrome).
  • Call your doctor right away if you have bad stomach pain that won't go away, nausea, and vomiting. These could be signs of a serious problem with your pancreas.
  • Get medical help right away if you have very bad trouble breathing. You might need emergency care to help you breathe normally.
  • Neurontin can cause a serious allergic reaction that affects your skin, liver, or blood. Tell your doctor right away if you get a rash, redness, hair loss, hives, fever, swollen glands, swelling of your lips, face, or tongue, yellow skin or eyes, unusual bruising or bleeding, extreme tiredness or weakness, muscle pain, or frequent infections.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Sedative. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Note especially central nervous system adverse effects. Take the several interactions in the absorption phase into account. (updated 14.4.2025)
