Method

It is usually given as a daily injection under the skin or slowly into a vein.

Important

Your doctor will tell you how long to take Neupogen until your white blood cell count is normal.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low platelet count, which makes blood clotting difficult
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia)
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Unusual hair loss or thinning
  • Tiredness
  • Soreness and swelling of the digestive tract lining, from mouth to anus (mucositis)
  • Fever
  • Muscle and bone pain
  • Bronchitis (inflammation of the airways)
  • Upper respiratory tract infection
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Reduced appetite
  • Sleep problems (insomnia)
  • Dizziness
  • Decreased skin sensitivity, especially to touch
  • Tingling or numbness in hands or feet
  • Low blood pressure
  • High blood pressure
  • Cough
  • Bloody sputum
  • Mouth and throat pain
  • Nosebleed
  • Constipation
  • Mouth pain
  • Enlarged liver
  • Rash
  • Reddening of skin
  • Muscle spasms

RARE
  • Increased white blood cell count (leukocytosis)
  • Allergic reaction (hypersensitivity)
  • Rejection of transplanted bone marrow (graft-versus-host disease)
  • High uric acid levels in blood, which can cause gout (hyperuricemia)
  • Liver damage caused by blockages in small liver veins (veno-occlusive disease)
  • Impaired lung function causing shortness of breath (respiratory failure)
  • Swelling and/or fluid accumulation in the lungs (pulmonary edema)
  • Lung inflammation (interstitial lung disease)
  • Changes visible in chest X-rays (lung infiltrates)
  • Bleeding from the lungs (pulmonary hemorrhage)
  • Reduced blood oxygenation in the lungs (hypoxia)
  • Maculopapular rash (red flat spots and small raised bumps on the skin)
  • Bone disease that reduces bone density, weakens and embrittles bones, making them prone to fractures (osteoporosis)
  • Injection site reaction
  • Severe bone, chest, gut, or joint pain (sickle cell crisis in sickle cell anemia patients)
  • Sudden life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
  • Gout-like joint pain and swelling (pseudogout)
  • Changes in body fluid balance, which can cause swelling (fluid balance disorders)
  • Inflammation of blood vessels in the skin (cutaneous vasculitis)
  • Purple-red, raised, painful sores on limbs, sometimes face and neck, with fever (Sweet's syndrome)
  • Worsening of rheumatoid arthritis
  • Unusual changes in urine
  • Decreased bone density
  • Inflammation of the aorta (the main artery carrying blood from the heart to the body)
  • Formation of blood cells outside the bone marrow (extramedullary hematopoiesis)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Neupogen if you are allergic to filgrastim or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have sickle cell anemia, as Neupogen can cause a sickle cell crisis.
  • Tell your doctor if you have osteoporosis (brittle bones).
  • Tell your doctor right away if you get sudden allergic reactions like rash, itching, hives, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or other body parts, shortness of breath, wheezing, or difficulty breathing.
  • Tell your doctor if you notice swelling in your face or ankles, blood in your urine, brown urine, or urinating less than usual (signs of kidney problems).

  • Tell your doctor if you have pain in your upper left belly, below your left ribs, or in your left shoulder tip (these can be signs of an enlarged or ruptured spleen).
  • Tell your doctor if you notice unusual bleeding or bruising (these can be signs of low platelets, which affect blood clotting).
  • Tell your doctor if you have symptoms of aorta inflammation (fever, belly pain, feeling unwell, back pain).
  • Neupogen is not recommended during pregnancy.
  • If you are breastfeeding, you should stop if your doctor does not tell you otherwise.
  • If you or your child have hereditary fructose intolerance, you should not use this medicine.
