Neotigason is a retinoid medicine used to treat severe skin conditions like psoriasis and other thickening skin disorders, and in some cases, certain gynecological issues.

How to Use

Dosage

Usually 10 mg once daily, adjusted by your doctor.

Method

Take the capsules once daily with a meal or milk. Swallow whole with a small amount of water or a non-alcoholic drink; do not chew.

Important

For psoriasis, up to 75 mg; for ichthyosis, up to 50 mg. For children, up to 35 mg. Your doctor may prescribe higher doses if needed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dry, irritated, or swollen eyes, which may affect contact lens use.
  • Dry or irritated nose, runny nose, nosebleeds.
  • Dry mouth, thirst.
  • Dry or inflamed lips (can be relieved with ointments); itching, hair loss, and peeling skin on palms, soles, or entire body.
  • Changes in liver function (seen in blood tests).
  • Increased blood fat levels (seen in blood tests).
  • Headache.
  • Oral mucosal inflammation, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting.
  • Fragile skin, sticky skin or rash, skin inflammation, abnormal hair texture, brittle nails, nail bed inflammation, skin redness.
  • Joint pain, muscle pain.
  • Swelling in hands, ankles, and feet.
RARE
  • Dizziness, blurred vision.
  • Gingivitis (gum inflammation), hepatitis (liver inflammation).
  • Skin cracks or fissures (e.g., around the mouth), blisters and skin inflammation (dermatitis bullous), increased sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Peripheral nerve damage, possibly with muscle weakness, numbness, tingling, or burning pain in hands and feet.
  • Benign intracranial hypertension (increased pressure in the head).
  • Night blindness, corneal ulcer (sore on the eye's surface).
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyeballs (jaundice).
  • Bone pain, changes in bone growth.
  • Vaginal yeast infection (candidiasis).
  • Hearing loss, ringing in the ears (tinnitus).
  • Flushing, changes in taste, rectal bleeding.
  • Small, reddish skin growths that may bleed easily (pyogenic granuloma).
  • Improved or worsened glucose tolerance in diabetic patients.
  • Loss of eyelashes or eyebrows (madarosis).
  • Swelling around the eyes, mouth, or lips (angioedema).
  • Hives, thinning skin.
  • Severe capillary leak syndrome (retinoid acid syndrome) causing leakage from small blood vessels, leading to low blood pressure, swelling, and shock.
  • Severe skin reaction with symptoms like rash, blistering, or peeling skin (exfoliative dermatitis).
  • Immediate allergic reaction with symptoms like rash, swelling or itchy skin, severe nasal congestion, asthma, or wheezing. Severity can range from mild to life-threatening.
  • Voice disorders (dysphonia), altered mood, and signs of psychosis (altered perception of reality, e.g., hearing voices or seeing things that are not there).

Important Warnings

  • This medicine can cause severe birth defects. Women must use effective contraception before, during, and for 3 years after treatment. Do not use if you are pregnant or think you might be.
  • Do not donate blood during treatment or for 3 years after stopping, due to the risk of birth defects if the blood is given to a pregnant woman.
  • Avoid alcohol during treatment and for two months after stopping, as it can increase the risk of birth defects.
  • Inform your doctor if you have a history of mental health issues like depression or mood swings, as this medicine can affect your mood and mental health.
  • If you have diabetes, high blood fats, heart problems, or liver issues, your doctor will monitor you closely.

  • Contact your doctor immediately if your night vision worsens or if you experience severe headaches, nausea, vomiting, or vision problems, as these could be signs of serious brain pressure.
  • This medicine can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Use sunscreen (SPF 15+) and avoid sunlamps or tanning beds.
  • Never share this medicine with anyone else because it could cause harm, especially to an unborn baby.
