How to Use

Dosage

The starting dose is usually 4.5 grams per day, divided into two equal doses (2.25 grams per dose).

Method

Take this medicine by mouth twice every evening. Take the first dose just before going to bed and the second dose 2.5–4 hours later. Prepare both doses before bedtime and take them within 24 hours. Take the medicine 2-3 hours after a meal, as food can reduce its absorption.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 9 grams, divided into two equal doses.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling sick (nausea), dizziness, headache
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia), strange dreams, sleep paralysis, feeling very sleepy, shaking
  • Feeling confused, nightmares, sleepwalking, wetting the bed, sweating a lot
  • Feeling down (depression), muscle cramps, swelling, falling down, joint pain, back pain
  • Trouble focusing, changes in how things feel (like numbness or tingling)
  • Feeling worried (anxiety), nervous, a spinning feeling (vertigo)
  • Vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, not wanting to eat, losing weight
  • Fast heartbeat, high blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath, snoring, stuffy nose, skin rash, sinus infection, sore throat
  • Blurred vision, changes in how food tastes
RARE
  • Serious mental health problems (psychosis), paranoia, strange thoughts, seeing or hearing things that aren't there (hallucinations)
  • Feeling very restless or agitated, trying to harm yourself (suicidal attempts)
  • Trouble falling asleep, restless legs, poor memory
  • Muscle twitching that you can't control, not being able to control bowel movements
  • Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity)

Important Warnings

  • Tell your doctor if you have breathing or lung problems, especially if you are overweight, as this medicine can make it harder to breathe.
  • Inform your doctor if you have or have had depression.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart failure, high blood pressure, or liver or kidney problems, as your dose might need to be adjusted.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of drug misuse.
  • Inform your doctor if you have epilepsy, as this medicine is not recommended for people with epilepsy.

  • Tell your doctor if you have porphyria (a rare metabolic disorder).
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience bedwetting, confusion, hallucinations, sleepwalking, or abnormal thoughts while taking this medicine.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can make the medicine's effects stronger.
  • Do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or do anything dangerous or requiring full attention for at least 6 hours after taking a dose of this medicine.
