How to Use

Dosage

For adults, typically 250-500 mg.

Method

Take the tablet with or without food, with a glass of water, 1-2 times a day.

Important

Do not exceed the dose prescribed by your doctor. The maximum dose is generally 1000 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Stomach pain, heartburn, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, or acid reflux.
  • Headache, dizziness, or feeling lightheaded.
  • Vision problems.
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus) or hearing problems.
  • Worsening heart failure (increased swelling or shortness of breath).
  • Itchy skin, mild rashes, increased sweating, purple-red rash (purpura), or bleeding under the skin.
  • Tiredness.
RARE
  • High potassium levels in blood (can cause muscle weakness and heart rhythm problems).
  • Mood changes, depression, difficulty concentrating, sleeplessness or sleep disturbances.
  • Feeling strong heartbeats (palpitations).
  • Stomach ulcers, bleeding, or perforations (can cause severe stomach pain, bloody vomit, black or bloody stools).
  • Increased liver enzyme levels, jaundice (yellowing of skin and whites of eyes).
  • Menstrual problems.
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) with a sudden drop in blood pressure, feeling unwell, dizziness, or fainting.
  • Angioedema (severe allergic swelling of the face, hands, feet, lips, tongue, mouth, or throat, causing breathing or swallowing difficulties).
  • Widespread rash, fever, increased liver enzymes, abnormal blood counts (eosinophilia), enlarged lymph nodes, and effects on other organs (DRESS syndrome).
  • Fixed drug eruption: a specific allergic skin reaction that reappears in the same area each time you take the medicine, appearing as red, swollen, round or oval blisters or itchy patches.
  • Worsening hearing.
  • Worsening asthma symptoms.
  • Liver inflammation (can cause upper abdominal pain).
  • Hair loss.
  • Pseudoporphyria (rash worsened by sunlight).
  • Muscle aches or weakness.
  • Meningitis (symptoms include stiff neck, headache, nausea, vomiting, fever, or confusion).
  • Increased eosinophils (a type of white blood cell) in the lungs.
  • Decreased platelets (can cause easy bruising or nosebleeds).
  • Decreased or absence of white blood cells (can cause unexplained fever, sore throat, flu-like symptoms, and increased risk of severe infections).
  • Breakdown or decrease of red blood cells (hemolytic or aplastic anemia).
  • Worsening of Parkinson's disease symptoms.
  • Inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis).
  • Inflammation of salivary glands, pancreatitis (can cause severe stomach pain).
  • Worsening of skin conditions like lichen planus, erythema nodosum, or lupus erythematosus.
  • Severe, peeling or blistering skin and mucous membrane symptoms (erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, or toxic epidermal necrolysis).
  • Worsening kidney failure, kidney inflammation, protein or blood in urine.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to naproxen or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have had allergic reactions like asthma, runny nose, nasal polyps, swelling, or hives from ibuprofen, aspirin, or other similar pain medicines.
  • Do not use if you have a stomach or duodenal ulcer, or a history of stomach bleeding or perforation related to pain medicine use.
  • Do not use if you have a condition that affects blood clotting (like hemophilia or low platelets) or if you are taking blood thinning medicines like warfarin.
  • Do not use if you have severe heart, kidney, or liver failure.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. For short-term use only. Consider adverse renal effect in chronic kidney disease. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Increases swelling, worsens renal and heart failure and causes cardiovascular events. Increases risk of bleeding, especially in the gastrointestinal tract. Consider potential interactions especially with preparations that increase risk of bleeding. (updated 16.9.2024)
