How to Use

Dosage

The dose depends on your situation and age. For adults, it's usually 0.1-2 mg, and for children, 0.01-0.02 mg per kilogram of body weight. Extra doses might be given if needed.

Method

A doctor or experienced healthcare professional will give you Naloxone Accord as an injection into a vein or muscle, or as an infusion into a vein after it's been diluted.

Important

For adults, the maximum dose for opioid overdose treatment is 10 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness, headache
  • High or low blood pressure (you might have a headache or feel dizzy)
  • Vomiting
  • Agitation and pain if too high a dose is given after surgery (because pain relief and breathing effects might be reversed)
RARE
  • Changes in heartbeat, slow heartbeat
  • Involuntary trembling or shaking, sweating
  • Diarrhea, dry mouth
  • Rapid breathing (hyperventilation)
  • Irritation of blood vessel wall reported after intravenous administration; local irritation and inflammation reported after intramuscular administration.
  • Seizures
  • Tension
  • Allergic reactions (hives, runny nose or cold-like symptoms, breathing difficulties, severe swelling), allergic shock
  • Ventricular fibrillation, cardiac arrest
  • Fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema)
  • Skin discoloration and damage (erythema multiforme)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Naloxone Accord if you are allergic to naloxone hydrochloride or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Naloxone Accord pre-filled syringe should not be used in infants weighing less than 4 kg.
  • Tell your doctor if you are physically dependent on opioids (like morphine) or have received high doses, as you might experience severe withdrawal symptoms (e.g., high blood pressure, fast heartbeat, severe breathing problems, or cardiac arrest) after Naloxone Accord.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems or circulation disorders, as side effects like high or low blood pressure, fast heartbeat, or severe breathing problems may be more likely.
  • Do not breastfeed for 24 hours after treatment with Naloxone Accord.

  • After receiving Naloxone Accord, do not drive, use machines, or do any demanding physical or mental activities for at least 24 hours, as the opioid effects might return.
