How to Use

Dosage

Start with 0.2 mg once a day. Your doctor may increase this to 0.4 mg once a day, or 0.3 mg twice a day.

Method

Take the tablet with enough water, with or without food, as directed by your doctor.

Important

The maximum single dose is 0.4 mg, and the maximum daily dose is 0.6 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dry mouth
  • Trouble thinking clearly
  • Sleep problems, drowsiness, feeling dizzy, headache, lightheadedness, insomnia
  • Feeling sick, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, indigestion and other stomach issues
  • Weakness
  • Widened blood vessels (causing slight redness and swelling)
  • Back pain
  • Rash, itching
RARE
  • Breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia), impotence, decreased sex drive
  • Depression, anxiety, tiredness (sedation), nervousness, fainting
  • Dry, itchy, burning eyes
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Neck pain
  • Slow heart rate (bradycardia)
  • Allergic skin reactions, swelling under the skin (angioedema)
  • Difficulty urinating (urinary retention) or inability to control urination (incontinence)
  • Fluid retention (edema) in different parts of the body
  • Weakness in the legs
  • Brief loss of consciousness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Pain in the salivary glands
  • Low blood pressure, dizziness when standing up (orthostatic hypotension), tingling in arms and legs (paresthesia), painful white fingers and toes followed by temporary blueness and redness (Raynaud's syndrome), circulation problems in arms and legs.
  • Liver reactions (liver inflammation), cholestasis (blocked bile flow) causing abdominal pain, jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes), itchy skin.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to moxonidine or any other ingredient.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have certain heart rhythm problems (e.g., sick sinus syndrome, second or third-degree AV block) or a very slow heart rate (below 50 beats per minute at rest).
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe kidney failure (applies to 0.4 mg).
  • Do not take this medicine if you have heart failure (your heart cannot pump enough blood, leading to breathlessness and swollen legs).
  • Talk to your doctor if you have first-degree AV block (a heart conduction disorder).

  • Talk to your doctor if you have severe coronary artery disease or chest pain at rest or with little effort (unstable angina pectoris).
  • Talk to your doctor if you have moderate kidney problems (applies to 0.4 mg). Your blood pressure will be regularly monitored, especially at the start of treatment.
  • If you are taking beta-blockers, they should be stopped first, and Moxonidin ratiopharm should be started a few days later to prevent a severe increase in blood pressure.
  • Do not stop taking Moxonidin ratiopharm suddenly; treatment should be gradually reduced over about two weeks as advised by your doctor.
  • This medicine should not be given to children or young people under 16 years of age.
  • Do not use this medicine during pregnancy.
  • If you are breastfeeding, you must stop if treatment with Moxonidin ratiopharm is considered necessary, as the active substance passes into breast milk.
  • This medicine may cause drowsiness and dizziness, so be careful when driving or operating machinery.
  • This medicine contains lactose. If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to some sugars, discuss this before taking the medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Sedative. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Significant adverse effects include orthostatism, headache, drowsiness and sleep disorders. Potentiates the effect of CNS depressants. (updated 19.5.2025)
