How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose for adults is one 400 mg tablet once a day.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with plenty of liquid, with or without food, at roughly the same time each day.

Important

Do not take more than one 400 mg tablet per day to avoid increased risk of heart problems.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Fungal infections (like thrush in mouth or vagina)
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Vomiting (being sick)
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in blood
RARE
  • Allergic reactions, including severe ones that cause trouble breathing or a drop in blood pressure.
  • Changes in blood counts, such as anemia (low red blood cells), low white blood cells, or issues with blood clotting.
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat (palpitations).
  • Serious liver inflammation or problems, which may include yellowing of eyes/skin (jaundice) or dark urine.
  • Nerve problems like pain, burning, tingling, numbness, or weakness in your arms or legs.
  • Mood changes like anxiety or depression, or thoughts of harming yourself.
  • Severe diarrhea with blood or mucus.
  • Tendon or joint pain, swelling, or rupture; muscle pain or weakness.
  • Vision problems like blurred or double vision, or temporary vision loss.
  • Increased skin sensitivity to sunlight or UV light.
  • Severe skin rashes such as painful blisters, peeling skin, or widespread red rash with bumps, sometimes with fever.
  • Swelling, including in the face, hands, feet, ankles, or airways.
  • Feeling confused or disoriented.
  • Changes in blood sugar levels (too high or too low), potentially leading to unconsciousness.
  • Sleep problems (insomnia or drowsiness) or abnormal dreams.
  • Feeling generally unwell, weak, or tired; severe muscle damage (rhabdomyolysis) that can lead to kidney problems.
  • Sudden severe pain in the abdomen, chest, or back (signs of a serious blood vessel problem like aortic aneurysm or dissection).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you have had serious side effects from other antibiotics like this one (fluoroquinolones) before.
  • Do not take if you are allergic to moxifloxacin, other quinolone antibiotics, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 18 years old.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, an irregular heartbeat, or if you take medicines that affect your heart.
  • Stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor right away if you feel pain or swelling in your tendons or joints, or if you have any nerve pain (like burning or tingling).

  • Seek immediate medical help if you get a severe skin rash with blisters or peeling skin, especially with fever or flu-like symptoms.
  • Stop taking this medicine and call your doctor right away if you experience mood changes, anxiety, depression, or thoughts of harming yourself.
  • Tell your doctor if you have diabetes, as your blood sugar levels may change while taking this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Risk of QT prolongation. Reduce the dose and/or increase the dosing interval in moderately severe renal impairment. Calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and aluminium reduce absorption. Increases the risk of tendinitis and aortic injury and valvular heart disease. Consider central nervous system adverse effects, especially lowered seizure threshold and confusion. (updated 4.12.2023)
