How to Use

Dosage

One 10 mg tablet.

Method

Take the tablet by mouth once a day in the evening, with or without food.

Important

Take only one tablet per day. Do not take a double dose if you miss one.

RARE
  • Allergic reactions (swelling of face, lips, tongue and/or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing)
  • Behaviour and mood changes (agitation, aggressiveness, hostility, depression, unusual dreams, nightmares, trouble sleeping, sleepwalking, irritability, anxiety, restlessness, hallucinations, disorientation, suicidal thoughts and behaviour)
  • Seizures
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, tingling or numbness
  • Nosebleeds
  • Dry mouth, indigestion
  • Bruising, itching, hives
  • Joint or muscle pain, muscle cramps
  • Bedwetting in children
  • Tiredness, feeling unwell, swelling
  • Increased bleeding tendency
  • Tremor
  • Palpitations
  • Attention problems, memory impairment
  • Uncontrolled muscle movements
  • Reduced number of platelets (thrombocytopenia)
  • Yellowing of skin and eyes, unusual tiredness/fever, dark urine (liver inflammation)
  • Swelling of the lungs
  • Flu-like illness, tingling/numbness in arms/legs, worsening lung symptoms and/or rash (Churg-Strauss syndrome)
  • Severe skin reactions (erythema multiforme)
  • Tender red lumps under the skin (erythema nodosum)
  • Stuttering
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder

Important Warnings

  • If your asthma gets worse or you have trouble breathing, contact your doctor immediately.
  • This medicine is not for sudden asthma attacks. Always carry your quick-relief asthma medicine with you.
  • Do not use this medicine to replace other asthma medicines prescribed by your doctor. It's important to take all your asthma medicines as directed.
  • If you get flu-like symptoms, tingling or numbness in your arms or legs, worsening lung symptoms, or a rash, contact your doctor.
  • Do not use aspirin or other anti-inflammatory pain relievers if they make your asthma worse.

  • Montelukast can cause changes in behaviour or mood, such as depression or suicidal thoughts. If you experience these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.
  • This medicine should not be given to children under 15 years old due to the high dose. Other forms of this medicine are available for younger children.
  • Make sure you are not taking other medicines that contain montelukast at the same time.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Consider possibility of adverse neuropsychiatric effects. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 17.2.2025)
