Montelukast ratiopharm is a medicine that helps relieve asthma symptoms and control asthma by blocking the effects of substances called leukotrienes.

How to Use

Dosage

One 5 mg chewable tablet once daily in the evening (for children aged 6-14 years).

Method

Chew the tablet before swallowing. Do not take immediately with food; take it 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.

Important

One tablet once daily. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Upper respiratory tract infection
  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
  • Rash
  • Fever
  • Elevated liver enzymes
RARE
  • Allergic reactions (e.g., swelling of face, lips, tongue, throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing)
  • Behavioral and mood changes (e.g., anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, hallucinations, confusion, aggression, sleep problems like nightmares, insomnia, sleepwalking, irritability, restlessness, attention problems, memory issues, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, stuttering)
  • Seizures
  • Increased bleeding tendency
  • Tremor
  • Palpitations
  • Churg-Strauss syndrome (a rare combination of symptoms including flu-like symptoms, tingling or numbness in limbs, worsening lung symptoms, and/or rash)
  • Low platelet count
  • Swelling or inflammation in the lungs
  • Severe skin reactions (e.g., erythema multiforme)
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, tingling or numbness
  • Nosebleed
  • Dry mouth, indigestion
  • Bruising, itching, hives
  • Joint or muscle pain, muscle cramps
  • Bedwetting in children
  • Weakness or fatigue, general feeling of being unwell, swelling
  • Tender red lumps under the skin (erythema nodosum), most commonly on the shins

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you or your child are allergic to montelukast or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • This medicine is not for sudden asthma attacks. Always use your prescribed inhaler for emergencies.
  • It is important to continue taking all other asthma medicines prescribed by your doctor. Montelukast ratiopharm does not replace them.
  • If your asthma worsens, or if you experience flu-like symptoms, tingling, numbness, or a rash, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Do not use aspirin or NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) if they worsen your asthma.

  • If you or your child experience behavioral or mood changes (e.g., anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts), contact a doctor immediately.
  • Do not give this medicine to children under 6 years of age.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant.
  • Contains aspartame (a source of phenylalanine), which may be harmful to people with phenylketonuria (PKU).
  • Do not use with other products containing the same active ingredient, montelukast.

Category A
