How to Use

Dosage

The recommended dose is one 10 mg tablet once daily in the evening.

Method

Take this medicine by mouth. You can take it with or without food, even when you have no symptoms or during an asthma attack.

Important

Do not take more than one 10 mg tablet per day. Never take a double dose to make up for a forgotten one.

  • Stomach pain
  • Headache
  • Upper respiratory infection
  • Diarrhea

  • Increased liver enzymes
RARE
  • Allergic reactions including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat, which may cause difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Behavior and mood changes: anxiety, aggression, hostility, depression, seizures, unusual dreams including nightmares, trouble sleeping, sleepwalking, irritability, restlessness, hallucinations, confusion, suicidal thoughts and actions, obsessive-compulsive disorder, stuttering
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, tingling or numbness, involuntary muscle movements
  • Nosebleed
  • Dry mouth, indigestion
  • Bruising, itching, hives, severe skin reactions (erythema multiforme)
  • Muscle or joint pain, muscle cramps
  • Bedwetting in children
  • Weakness/tiredness, general feeling of being unwell, swelling
  • Increased bleeding tendency
  • Tremors
  • Heart palpitations
  • Attention problems, memory impairment
  • Combination of symptoms like flu-like illness, tingling or numbness in arms and legs, worsening lung symptoms, and/or rash (Churg-Strauss syndrome)
  • Low blood platelet count
  • Swelling (inflammation) in the lungs
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Sore red lumps under the skin, especially on the shins (erythema nodosum)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to montelukast or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if your asthma worsens or your breathing becomes difficult.
  • This medicine is not for sudden asthma attacks. Always carry your rescue inhaler for asthma attacks and follow your doctor's instructions.
  • It is important to continue taking all other asthma medications prescribed by your doctor. Montelukast Orion should not replace other asthma medicines.
  • Talk to your doctor if you experience flu-like symptoms, tingling or numbness in your arms or legs, worsening lung symptoms, and/or rash while taking this medicine.

  • Avoid aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs if they make your asthma worse.
  • If you experience changes in behavior or mood, depression, or suicidal thoughts while taking montelukast, contact your doctor immediately.
  • This medicine is not for children under 15 years of age.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Consider possibility of adverse neuropsychiatric effects. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 17.2.2025)
