How to Use

Dosage

One 5 mg chewable tablet once a day, usually in the evening.

Method

You can chew the tablet or swallow it whole with water. Take on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after a meal.

COMMON
  • Upper respiratory infection
  • Headache
  • Stomach ache
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea

  • Elevated liver enzymes
RARE
  • Allergic reactions, including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, which can cause difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Mood or behavior changes: anxiety, aggressive behavior, hostility, depression
  • Seizures
  • Increased tendency to bleed
  • Tremor (shaking)
  • Palpitations (fast or irregular heartbeat)
  • Combination of symptoms like flu, tingling or numbness in arms and legs, worsening lung problems, and/or rash (Churg-Strauss syndrome)
  • Low blood platelet count
  • Severe mood or behavior changes: hallucinations, confusion, suicidal thoughts or actions
  • Swelling (inflammation) in the lungs
  • Severe skin reactions, like a red, target-shaped rash (erythema multiforme), that can appear suddenly
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Abnormal dreams, including nightmares, trouble sleeping, sleepwalking
  • Irritability, restlessness
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, tingling or numbness
  • Nosebleed
  • Dry mouth, indigestion
  • Bruising, itching, hives
  • Muscle or joint pain, muscle cramps
  • Bedwetting in children
  • Weakness, fatigue, general feeling of being unwell, swelling
  • Attention problems, impaired memory, involuntary muscle jerking
  • Obsessive-compulsive symptoms, stuttering
  • Tender red lumps under the skin, usually on the shins (erythema nodosum)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you or your child are allergic to montelukast or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • This medicine is not for sudden asthma attacks. Always carry your rescue inhaler for emergencies.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if your asthma gets worse or you have new symptoms like flu-like illness, tingling, numbness, worsening lung symptoms, or rash.
  • If you notice changes in mood or behavior, depression, or thoughts of self-harm, contact your doctor right away.
  • It is important to keep taking all other asthma medicines prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop them unless your doctor tells you to.

  • Avoid aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs if they make your asthma worse.
  • Not for children under 6 years old.
  • Continue taking this medicine as long as your doctor prescribes it, even if you feel better, to keep your asthma controlled.
  • This medicine contains aspartame (a source of phenylalanine), which may be harmful if you have phenylketonuria (PKU).
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Category A
