How to Use

Dosage

One 5 mg chewable tablet once a day in the evening.

Method

Chew the tablet before swallowing. Take it even if you feel well or have an asthma attack.

Important

Do not take more than one 5 mg chewable tablet per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Upper respiratory infection
  • Headache
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Rash
  • Fever
  • High liver enzyme levels
RARE
  • Allergic reactions, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, which can cause trouble breathing or swallowing.
  • Mood and behavior changes, such as anxiety, aggressive behavior, hostility, depression, or seizures.
  • Increased tendency to bleed.
  • Tremors.
  • Palpitations (fast or irregular heartbeat).
  • A combination of symptoms such as flu-like illness, tingling or numbness in arms and legs, worsening lung problems, and/or rash (Churg-Strauss syndrome).
  • Low blood platelet count.
  • Hallucinations, confusion, suicidal thoughts or actions.
  • Swelling or inflammation in the lungs.
  • Severe skin reactions, such as painful red spots (erythema multiforme), which may appear suddenly.
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis).
  • Unusual dreams, including nightmares.
  • Sleep problems, such as difficulty sleeping or sleepwalking.
  • Irritability, anxiety, or restlessness.
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, or tingling/numbness.
  • Nosebleeds.
  • Dry mouth or indigestion.
  • Bruising, itching, or hives.
  • Joint or muscle pain, or muscle cramps.
  • Bedwetting in children.
  • Weakness, tiredness, feeling unwell, or swelling.
  • Attention problems, memory loss, or involuntary muscle movements.
  • Obsessive-compulsive symptoms or stuttering.
  • Painful red lumps under the skin, most often on the shins (erythema nodosum).

Important Warnings

  • If your asthma gets worse or you have trouble breathing, tell your doctor right away.
  • This medicine is not for sudden asthma attacks. Always carry your rescue inhaler.
  • Do not stop taking other asthma medicines unless your doctor tells you to. This medicine does not replace them.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your child gets flu-like symptoms, tingling or numbness in arms/legs, worsening lung problems, and/or a rash.
  • Do not take aspirin or other anti-inflammatory pain medicines (NSAIDs) if they make your asthma worse.

  • Contact your doctor if you notice behavior or mood changes, depression, or suicidal thoughts while taking this medicine.
  • Do not give this medicine to children under 6 years old.
  • Avoid taking this medicine with food; take it at least one hour before or two hours after a meal.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to have a baby, ask your doctor before using this medicine.
  • This medicine contains aspartame, which is a source of phenylalanine. It can be harmful if you or your child has phenylketonuria (PKU).
  • This medicine contains benzyl alcohol, which can cause allergic reactions. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have liver/kidney problems, ask your doctor before use, as large amounts can build up and cause problems.
  • Do not use other medicines containing montelukast.
