How to Use

Dosage

Method

This medicine is given as an injection into a muscle, under the skin, into a vein, or near the spinal cord.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Mood changes (usually feeling happy, sometimes sad)
  • Difficulty urinating (especially after administration near the spinal cord)
  • Changes in activity (feeling less active or overly active/agitated)
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Changes in thinking and senses (like trouble thinking clearly, seeing or hearing things that aren't there, or feeling disoriented)
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Excessive sweating
  • Low oxygen levels in the blood
  • Vomiting (especially at first), loss of appetite, stomach problems, or changes in taste
  • Allergic reactions like hives or itching
  • Incomplete emptying of the bladder
RARE
  • High pressure inside the head
  • Burning or tingling sensation on the skin
  • Changes in blood pressure or heart rate (fast or slow)
  • Heart palpitations or heart failure
  • Breathing difficulties (respiratory depression) or too much carbon dioxide in the blood
  • Reactivation of cold sore infections (when given near the spinal cord)
  • Sudden narrowing of the airways (bronchospasm)
  • Increased pancreas enzyme levels or inflammation of the pancreas, gallstone or kidney stone pain attacks
  • Withdrawal syndrome (symptoms as described in the warnings section)
  • SIADH (a condition where the body holds too much water, causing low salt levels)
  • Dependence, decreased sexual desire, or impotence
  • Tremors, involuntary muscle twitching, or epileptic seizures (especially when given near the spinal cord)
  • Blurred vision, double vision, or uncontrolled eye movements
  • Pupil constriction (pinpoint pupils)
  • Lung edema not caused by heart problems (observed in ICU patients)
  • Bowel obstruction (ileus) or stomach pain
  • Elevated liver enzyme levels
  • Facial flushing
  • Other rashes (e.g., widespread rash) or swelling of the limbs (peripheral edema), which goes away after stopping the medicine
  • Muscle spasms or muscle stiffness
  • Fatigue, general malaise, chills, or missed periods
  • Severe neurological symptoms (like muscle weakness caused by inflamed tissue around a catheter tip) when given near the spinal cord
  • Delayed breathing problems (up to 24 hours after administration) when given near the spinal cord
  • Dry mouth
  • Increased pain sensitivity
  • Sleep apnea (breathing stops during sleep)
  • Symptoms of pancreas and bile duct inflammation (e.g., severe upper stomach pain radiating to the back, nausea, vomiting, or fever)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Molnex if you are allergic to morphine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take Molnex if you have a bowel obstruction, severe breathing problems (like asthma), or too much mucus in your airways.
  • Do not take Molnex if you have sudden stomach pain whose cause is unknown, acute liver disease, an acute head injury with increased pressure inside your head, or uncontrolled epilepsy.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had an opioid, drug, or alcohol dependence, or if you have reduced consciousness or low blood pressure.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you have an enlarged prostate or difficulty urinating, adrenal gland problems (Addison's disease), or any signs of dependence or withdrawal symptoms.

  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe allergic reactions (difficulty breathing, dizziness) or severe skin reactions (blisters, widespread peeling skin, pus-filled spots with fever).
  • Constipation is a common side effect of morphine treatment; you may need to take laxatives from the start of treatment.
