How to Use

Dosage

Typically 40 mg, administered once a week. Your doctor will decide the exact dose and frequency.

Method

The medicine is inserted into an empty bladder using a catheter. The solution should stay in the bladder for 1-2 hours, and you should move during this time to ensure the medicine covers the entire bladder. Do not drink too much fluid before, during, or after treatment. Empty your bladder in a sitting position to prevent splashing.

Important

Single dose per administration, typically once a week.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Bladder inflammation (cystitis), possibly with blood in the bladder/urine
  • Painful urination (dysuria)
  • Frequent urge to urinate at night (nocturia)
  • Excessively frequent urination (pollakisuria)
  • Blood in urine (hematuria)
  • Local irritation of the bladder wall
  • Local skin rash (local exanthema)
  • Allergic rash
  • Rash due to mitomycin contact (contact dermatitis)
  • Numbness, swelling, and painful redness of palms and soles (palmar-plantar erythema)
RARE
  • General body rash (generalized exanthema)
  • Bladder inflammation with tissue damage (necrotizing cystitis)
  • Allergic (eosinophilic) bladder inflammation (cystitis)
  • Narrowing of urinary tract (stenosis)
  • Reduced bladder capacity
  • Calcium hardening in the bladder wall (bladder wall calcification)
  • Partial conversion of bladder wall tissue to connective tissue (bladder wall fibrosis)
  • Reduced white blood cell count (leukopenia), which increases the risk of infections
  • Reduced platelet count (thrombocytopenia), which causes bruising and bleeding
  • Systemic allergic reactions
  • Lung disease with symptoms of shortness of breath, dry cough, and wheezing when breathing in (interstitial lung disease)
  • Elevated liver enzyme levels (elevated transaminases)
  • Hair loss (alopecia)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Kidney disease (kidney failure) where urination is minimal or absent
  • Fever

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to mitomycin or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not breastfeed while using this medicine.
  • Do not use if your bladder wall has a hole in it (is perforated).
  • Do not use if you have a bladder infection (cystitis).
  • Tell your doctor if you are not feeling well in general.

  • Tell your doctor if you have problems with your lungs, liver, or kidneys.
  • Tell your doctor if you are receiving radiation therapy or other cancer treatments.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a condition where your bone marrow does not make enough blood cells (bone marrow depression), as this can worsen.
  • If you can become pregnant, talk to your doctor, as this medicine may affect your ability to have children.
  • If you experience stomach or pelvic pain right after or weeks/months after using this medicine, tell your doctor immediately.
  • Mitomycin can cause changes in your genes and may potentially increase the risk of cancer.
  • Avoid direct contact with your skin and mucous membranes (like inside your nose or mouth).
  • After using the medicine, sit when you urinate to prevent splashing. Always wash your hands and genital area well afterwards, especially the first time you urinate.
  • If the medicine accidentally leaks outside your bladder, it can cause problems such as bladder damage, abscesses (pus pockets) in your abdomen, tissue death in surrounding areas, or a bladder fistula (an abnormal connection or opening).
