How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 15 mg or 30 mg per day; your doctor may adjust this to a suitable dose between 15 mg and 45 mg per day.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water or juice, without chewing. You can take it with or without food. It is best taken once a day, usually before going to bed, or your doctor might suggest splitting the dose for morning and evening.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 45 mg.

Possible Side Effects

  • Increased appetite and weight gain
  • Feeling sleepy or very tired
  • Headache
  • Dry mouth
  • Dizziness
  • Shaking or tremor
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Skin rash
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Back pain
  • Dizziness or fainting when you stand up too quickly
  • Swelling in your ankles or feet due to fluid retention
  • Vivid dreams
  • Confusion
  • Anxiety
  • Sleep problems
  • Memory problems (often went away after stopping the medicine)
RARE
  • Feeling overly happy or excited (mania)
  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice), which may indicate liver problems
  • Signs of infection like sudden high fever, sore throat, or mouth ulcers (agranulocytosis), which can be due to problems with blood cell production
  • Epileptic seizures
  • Serotonin syndrome (a combination of symptoms like unexplained fever, sweating, fast heart rate, diarrhea, uncontrollable muscle spasms, restlessness, mood changes, and unconsciousness)
  • Thoughts of harming yourself or suicide
  • Severe skin reactions, such as red target-like spots or blisters, peeling skin, and sores in the mouth, throat, nose, genitals, and eyes (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, DRESS syndrome)
  • Abnormal skin sensations like burning, tingling, itching, or prickling
  • Restless legs
  • Fainting
  • Numbness in the mouth
  • Low blood pressure
  • Nightmares
  • Anxiety with a strong need to move
  • Seeing or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations)
  • Compulsive desire to move
  • Muscle twitching or contractions
  • Aggressiveness
  • Abdominal pain and feeling sick (nausea), which could be a sign of pancreas inflammation (pancreatitis)
  • Abnormal sensations in the mouth
  • Swelling of the mouth
  • General swelling of the body
  • Local swelling
  • Low sodium levels in the blood (hyponatremia)
  • Too much antidiuretic hormone (a hormone that controls water in the body)
  • Sleepwalking
  • Trouble speaking
  • Increased levels of a muscle enzyme in the blood (creatine kinase)
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Muscle pain, stiffness, or weakness with dark or discolored urine (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Increased prolactin levels in the blood, which can cause enlarged breasts and milky discharge from nipples
  • Painful and prolonged erection of the penis

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to mirtazapine or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take Mirtazapin Actavis if you are currently taking or have recently taken (in the last two weeks) medicines called MAO inhibitors (MAOIs).
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had a severe skin rash, peeling skin, blisters, or mouth sores after taking mirtazapine or other medicines.
  • This medicine is not usually for children or teenagers under 18 years old.
  • If you ever have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor or go to a hospital right away.

  • If you start having seizures or if your seizures happen more often, stop taking the medicine and call your doctor right away.
  • If your skin or eyes turn yellow (jaundice), stop taking the medicine and call your doctor right away.
  • If you feel overly happy or excited (mania), stop taking the medicine and call your doctor right away.
  • If you get signs of infection like a sudden high fever, sore throat, or mouth sores, stop taking the medicine and talk to your doctor right away for a possible blood test.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can make you feel sleepy.
  • This medicine can affect your alertness. Do not drive or operate machines until you are sure your abilities are not affected.
