How to Use

Dosage

For diabetes insipidus, typically 2-4 sprays (2.5 micrograms/spray) 1-2 times daily in the nose.

Method

Always follow your doctor's instructions. Tilt your head back slightly, insert the spray tip into one nostril, hold your breath, and spray once. If you need more than one spray, repeat in the other nostril, alternating nostrils for additional doses.

Important

Do not exceed 8 sprays per day unless specifically instructed by your doctor.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Minirin if you are allergic to desmopressin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use Minirin if you have a condition with excessive drinking or if you are being treated with diuretics (water pills).
  • Use Minirin with caution in young children, elderly patients, and those with fluid imbalance. An adult should supervise if the medicine is given to a child.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medications, such as antidepressants, epilepsy medicines, diabetes medicines (sulfonylureas), or NSAIDs, as combining them with Minirin can cause too much fluid to build up in your body.
  • Do not use Minirin if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as it contains chlorobutanol which may harm your baby and increase the risk of heart rhythm problems.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Risk of fluid retention and hyponatraemia. Treatment of ADH deficiency can be started under specialist supervision. (updated 6.11.2023)
