Minirin helps your kidneys concentrate urine, reducing the need to urinate and thirst, and is used for conditions like bedwetting, frequent nighttime urination, and diabetes insipidus.

How to Use

Dosage

Take 1-2 tablets (60-120 micrograms) under your tongue, usually once at night for bedwetting or frequent nighttime urination, or three times a day for diabetes insipidus, as directed by your doctor.

Method

Place the freeze-dried, orally disintegrating tablet under your tongue, where it will dissolve.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 360 micrograms for diabetes insipidus and 240 micrograms for frequent nighttime urination, as directed by your doctor. Always limit fluid intake as instructed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation
  • Feeling tired or dizzy
  • Swelling (fluid retention)
  • High blood pressure
  • Low blood sodium
  • Bladder and urinary problems
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
  • Confusion or seizures
  • Mood changes (like aggression, depression) or sleep problems (like nightmares, insomnia)
  • Skin reactions (like rashes, itching, hives)
  • Nosebleeds or increased sweating
  • Muscle cramps or pain
  • Vision problems (like blurry vision) or balance issues (like spinning sensation, dizziness when standing up)
  • Heart palpitations or shortness of breath
  • Other digestion issues (like indigestion, gas, bloating)
  • General feeling of being unwell, chest pain, or flu-like symptoms
  • Weight gain
  • High or low blood salts (sodium or potassium)
  • Dehydration

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Minirin if you are allergic to desmopressin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe thirst, heart failure, serious kidney problems, or very low sodium in your blood.
  • Limit your fluid intake as instructed by your doctor, especially 1 hour before and 8 hours after taking Minirin, to avoid too much fluid in your body.
  • Tell your doctor if you are over 65, have low blood sodium, or produce a lot of urine daily.
  • Be careful if you are at risk of increased pressure in your head.

  • Minirin may not work as well if taken with food.
  • Always talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking any new medicine, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking other medications.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Risk of fluid retention and hyponatraemia. Treatment of ADH deficiency can be started under specialist supervision. (updated 6.11.2023)
