How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the dose; typically, a starting dose of 50 micrograms of milrinone per kg of body weight over 10 minutes is given, followed by a continuous infusion of 0.375–0.75 micrograms per kg per minute.

Method

The medicine is given as a slow injection or infusion directly into a vein.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 1.13 mg of milrinone per kg of body weight.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Mild to moderate headache
  • Irregular heartbeat due to extra beats
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Heart rhythm disorders
  • Low blood pressure
RARE
  • Decreased platelet count
  • Low potassium level
  • Tremor
  • Ventricular fibrillation (a serious irregular heartbeat)
  • Severe chest pain, often with a tight feeling and shortness of breath
  • Elevated liver enzymes (signs of liver problems)
  • Decreased red blood cell count
  • Decreased hemoglobin level
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock)
  • Dangerous fast heartbeat (Torsade de Pointes)
  • Spasms of the airways (bronchospasm)
  • Skin reactions, such as rash
  • Reactions at the infusion site
  • Bleeding around the brain (intraventricular hemorrhage) (in children)
  • Heart defect called patent ductus arteriosus (an open connection between two major blood vessels) (in children)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Milnocor if you are allergic to milrinone or any other ingredient.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe narrowing of your heart valves.
  • Milnocor can make some heart rhythm problems worse, so tell your doctor if you have a history of them.
  • Your doctor will check if your heart's filling pressure is too low and fix it before you get Milnocor.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems or low blood pressure.

  • Milnocor might lower your blood platelet or red blood cell counts, so your doctor will watch these levels closely.
  • The injection site must be closely watched to prevent problems.
  • Treatment with Milnocor should not last longer than 48 hours.
