How to Use

Dosage

The doctor will determine your dose individually based on your age, weight, general health, and the reason for treatment.

Method

It can be given as a slow injection into a vein, as an infusion (drip) into a vein, as an injection into a muscle, or rectally.

Important

The maximum daily dose will be determined by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Reduced alertness
  • Feeling confused
  • Feeling very happy or excited (euphoria)
  • Changes in sex drive
  • Long-lasting tiredness, sleepiness, or drowsiness
  • Seeing or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations)
  • Severe confusion or mental disturbance (delirium)
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty coordinating muscle movements
  • Seizures (fits) in premature babies and newborns
  • Temporary memory loss
  • Feeling agitated, restless, angry, or aggressive, possibly with uncontrolled muscle spasms or trembling
  • Fainting
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Redness of the face and neck (flushing)
  • Low blood pressure, causing lightheadedness or fainting
  • Hiccups
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting)
  • Itching
  • Rash, including raised, itchy bumps (hives)
  • Redness, pain, blood clot, or tenderness at the injection site
  • Allergic reactions like skin rash and wheezing
  • Swelling of the skin or mucous membranes (angioedema)
  • Increased risk of falls and fractures, especially in older people or when taken with other sedatives (including alcohol)
  • Withdrawal symptoms (e.g., mood changes, headaches, diarrhea, muscle pain, trouble sleeping, anxiety, confusion, hallucinations) if used long-term and stopped suddenly
  • Drug abuse
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock) with symptoms like sudden widespread rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other body parts. You may also have trouble breathing, wheezing, pale skin, a weak and fast pulse, or feel like you are losing consciousness. Chest pain might also occur.
  • Heart attack (cardiac arrest) with symptoms such as chest pain.
  • Severe breathing problems that can sometimes stop breathing completely.
  • Muscle spasms in the throat area (laryngospasm) causing choking.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to midazolam, other similar medicines (benzodiazepines), or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe breathing problems and are receiving this medicine to stay calm but awake.
  • Do not drink alcohol after receiving this medicine, as it can make you very sleepy and cause breathing difficulties.
  • Do not breastfeed for 24 hours after receiving this medicine, as it can pass into your breast milk.
  • Do not drive or use machines until your doctor says it is safe, as this medicine can make you tired, forgetful, and affect your focus and coordination.

  • Taking this medicine with strong pain relievers (opioids) can increase the risk of severe sleepiness, breathing problems, and coma, which could be life-threatening.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Sedative. Being very short-acting, may cause amnesia and confusion. Increases the risk of drug addiction, rebound insomnia and cognitive disorder. Increases the risk of falls and traffic accidents. Paradoxically, may increase anxiety, restlessness and aggression. Consider the numerous potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 12.2.2024)
