Method

The medicine can be given as a slow injection or infusion into a vein, as an injection into a muscle, or rectally.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Sudden rash, itching, hives, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other body parts. Also shortness of breath, wheezing, pale skin, weak and rapid pulse, or loss of consciousness, chest pain (Kounis syndrome).

  • Chest pain that may spread to the neck, shoulders, and left arm.

  • Severe breathing difficulties or complications that may lead to breathing stopping.

  • Feeling of choking and sudden airway blockage (laryngospasm).

  • General allergic reactions (skin reactions, heart and circulatory symptoms, wheezing).

  • Restlessness, agitation, irritability, nervousness, anxiety.

  • Hostility, anger, aggression, or violence.

  • Excitement, hyperactivity, changes in libido.

  • Inappropriate behavior.

  • Seizures (especially in premature and newborn babies).

  • Low blood pressure (can cause dizziness or fainting), slow heart rate.

  • Redness of face and neck, fainting.

  • Nausea or vomiting, constipation, dry mouth.

  • Redness, skin swelling, blood clots, or pain at the injection site.

  • Risk of falls and bone fractures (especially in elderly people and those using other sedatives).

  • Fatigue (exhaustion).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to midazolam, other benzodiazepines (like diazepam or nitrazepam), or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe breathing problems and need this medicine for sedation.
  • Do not drink alcohol, as it can increase the sedative effect of the medicine and cause breathing difficulties.
  • Do not breastfeed for 24 hours after receiving the medicine, as it can pass into breast milk.
  • Do not drive or operate machines until you have fully recovered from the effects of the medicine. Ensure a responsible adult accompanies you home after treatment.

  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe side effects such as a sudden severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock), heart attack, serious breathing difficulties, or a choking sensation.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Sedative. Being very short-acting, may cause amnesia and confusion. Increases the risk of drug addiction, rebound insomnia and cognitive disorder. Increases the risk of falls and traffic accidents. Paradoxically, may increase anxiety, restlessness and aggression. Consider the numerous potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 12.2.2024)
