How to Use

Dosage

The doctor will decide your dose. For adults, it's often 100 mg daily for serious infections, or 50 mg daily to prevent them. Doses for children depend on their weight.

Method

This medicine is given once a day as a slow infusion into a vein.

Important

Your doctor will determine the maximum daily dose for you, which can be up to 150 mg depending on your condition.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Changes in blood tests (low white blood cells, low red blood cells/anemia)
  • Low levels of potassium, magnesium, or calcium in the blood
  • Headache
  • Inflammation of the vein where the medicine is injected
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain
  • Abnormal liver function tests (increased liver enzymes)
  • High levels of bilirubin in the blood (yellowing of skin/eyes)
  • Rash
  • Fever
  • Chills
RARE
  • Abnormal blood tests (low levels of all blood cells, low platelets, increased certain white blood cells, low blood protein)
  • Hypersensitivity (allergic reaction)
  • Increased sweating
  • Low blood sodium, high blood potassium, low blood phosphate, loss of appetite
  • Insomnia (trouble sleeping), anxiety, confusion
  • Drowsiness, tremor, dizziness, taste disturbance
  • Fast heartbeat, strong heartbeats, irregular heartbeats
  • High or low blood pressure, skin redness and warmth
  • Shortness of breath
  • Indigestion, constipation
  • Liver failure, increased liver enzymes, jaundice (yellow skin/eyes), reduced bile flow, enlarged liver, liver inflammation
  • Itchy rash (hives), itching, skin redness
  • Abnormal kidney function tests (high creatinine, high urea), worsening kidney failure, acute kidney failure
  • Increased levels of an enzyme called lactate dehydrogenase
  • Blood clots in the vein at the injection site, inflammation at the injection site, pain at the injection site, fluid retention in the body
  • Anemia due to red blood cell breakdown (hemolytic anemia); red blood cell breakdown (hemolysis)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to micafungin, other 'echinocandin' medicines, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have serious liver problems or unusual liver tests, as your liver will be monitored closely.
  • Inform your doctor if you have hemolytic anemia (a type of anemia where red blood cells are destroyed).
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, as your kidney function may be monitored.
  • This medicine can cause severe skin reactions; seek immediate medical attention if you develop blisters or peeling skin.
