How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your daily dose, which is usually between 50 mg and 150 mg for adults and children over 40 kg, or 1-10 mg/kg for those 40 kg or less and newborns, depending on the infection.

Method

This medicine is given as a slow infusion (drip) into a vein once a day by a healthcare professional.

Important

The maximum daily dose depends on the treated condition and weight, generally up to 150 mg for adults and 10 mg/kg for very young children.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Abnormal blood tests (e.g., low white blood cells, low red blood cells, low blood platelets)
  • Low levels of potassium, magnesium, or calcium in blood
  • Headache
  • Swelling or redness where the medicine is given (inflammation of vein wall)
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain
  • Abnormal liver tests
  • Increased bile pigment in blood (jaundice)
  • Rash
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Fast heartbeat
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Enlarged liver
  • Acute kidney failure, increased urea in blood
RARE
  • More abnormal blood tests (e.g., low all blood cells, low albumin)
  • Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity, shock)
  • Increased sweating
  • Low blood sodium or phosphate, high blood potassium, loss of appetite
  • Trouble sleeping, anxiety, confusion
  • Sleepiness, shaking, dizziness, changed taste
  • Strong or irregular heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Indigestion, constipation
  • Liver problems (e.g., liver failure, jaundice, inflammation, liver cell damage potentially leading to death)
  • Itchy rash, itching, red skin
  • Abnormal kidney tests, worsening kidney failure
  • Increased levels of certain enzymes in blood
  • Blood clots, inflammation, or pain at injection site, fluid retention
  • Anemia from red blood cell breakdown (hemolytic anemia)
  • Blood clotting disorder

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to micafungin, other 'echinocandin' medicines, or any other ingredients.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe liver problems or have had abnormal liver tests, as your liver function will be monitored closely.
  • Inform your doctor if you have kidney problems, as your kidney function may need close monitoring.
  • Tell your doctor if you have hemolytic anemia (a type of anemia where red blood cells are destroyed) or hemolysis.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe skin reactions, such as blistering or peeling skin.
