How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose. For adults, a typical starting dose is 15 mg per kg of body weight, followed by 7.5 mg per kg every 8 hours.

Method

This medicine is given as a drip directly into a vein (intravenous infusion).

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually up to 2250 mg, but your doctor will set your specific limit. Treatment rarely lasts longer than 10 days.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Yeast infections (e.g., in the genital area)
RARE
  • Severe skin reactions with fever, redness, and blisters (like Stevens-Johnson syndrome) or peeling skin
  • Brain problems (encephalopathy) with fever, stiff neck, headache, hallucinations, or trouble with movement/speech; nerve problems like numbness, tingling, or pain in arms/legs; seizures
  • Changes in blood cell counts (seen in blood tests) that can cause infections, mouth sores, easy bruising, or extreme tiredness
  • Mental changes like confusion, hallucinations, depression, drowsiness, or difficulty sleeping
  • Vision problems (like double vision, blurred vision), uncontrolled eye movements, or optic nerve inflammation/damage
  • Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dry mouth, metallic/bitter taste, loss of appetite, sore tongue/mouth, burping, pressure in upper stomach, pancreatitis
  • Liver problems (shown in blood tests), inflammation of bile ducts causing yellow skin, sudden severe liver failure (especially in Cockayne syndrome patients)
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Pain when urinating or bladder inflammation
  • Darkened urine; irritation of blood vessel walls (including vein inflammation and blood clots); changes in heart's electrical activity (on ECG)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to metronidazole or similar medicines.
  • Seek urgent medical help if you have signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of face/throat, difficulty breathing, or severe skin rash.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe liver disease, blood disorders (like low blood cell counts), or Cockayne syndrome, as special monitoring is needed.
  • Stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you have stomach pain, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fever, tiredness, yellow skin, dark urine, pale stools, or itching, as these can be signs of liver problems.
  • Do not drink alcohol during treatment and for at least one day after, as it can cause unpleasant side effects like nausea and vomiting.

  • This medicine can make you dizzy, confused, or cause vision problems. Do not drive or operate machines if you feel these effects.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy, talk to your doctor before using this medicine.
