How to Use

Dosage

For adults, typically 500 mg three times a day.

Method

This medicine is given as a slow drip into a vein (an infusion), usually over 60 minutes.

Important

For adults, the dose is usually no more than 1500 mg daily, and treatment normally does not exceed 10 days.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Yeast infections (e.g., genital infections)
  • Darkening of urine (caused by a substance from the medicine)
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Metallic taste in the mouth, inflammation of the tongue or mouth
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headache, dizziness, drowsiness
  • Skin redness and itching
  • Irritation of the vein at the injection site (including inflammation or blood clots)
  • Weakness, fever
RARE
  • Severe and persistent diarrhea (may be a sign of a serious bowel infection called pseudomembranous colitis)
  • Severe allergic reactions, including allergic shock
  • Changes seen in heart rhythm tests (ECG)
  • Low numbers of white blood cells or platelets in the blood (can increase infection risk or bleeding)
  • Liver inflammation, yellowing of the skin/eyes (jaundice), or inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
  • Brain function problems, lack of coordination, or non-bacterial meningitis (inflammation around the brain)
  • Severe skin reactions like rashes with fever, redness, blistering, or skin peeling (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
  • Mental health issues like confusion, seeing or hearing things that aren't there (hallucinations), or other psychotic disorders
  • Speech problems, seizures (fits)
  • Vision problems, such as double vision, blurred vision, or damage to the optic nerve
  • Acute severe liver damage in patients with Cockayne syndrome
  • Nerve problems like numbness, pain, or tingling in your arms or legs

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to metronidazole or similar substances.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe liver, blood, or nerve diseases.
  • If you get severe diarrhea, treatment may need to be stopped.
  • Your blood will be checked during long-term use, as the medicine can affect blood cell formation.
  • Do not drink alcohol during treatment or for 48 hours after it ends.

  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant, talk to your doctor before use.
  • This medicine can cause drowsiness, dizziness, or confusion; do not drive or use machines if you have these symptoms.
  • If you have Cockayne syndrome, your doctor will regularly check your liver function.
