How to Use

Dosage

The typical dose is usually one 47.5 mg prolonged-release tablet or half of a 95 mg tablet once a day, but your doctor will decide the right dose for you.

Method

Take the prolonged-release tablets once a day, preferably with breakfast. Swallow the tablets whole or divided, but do not chew or crush them. Take with at least half a glass of water.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 190 mg, but your doctor will tell you the highest dose you should take.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Noticeable drop in blood pressure, especially when standing up from lying down (sometimes leading to fainting)
  • Tiredness
  • Slow pulse (bradycardia)
  • Feeling of irregular or strong heartbeats (palpitations)
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Shortness of breath during exertion
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Dizziness when changing body position (sometimes even fainting)
  • Cold hands and feet
RARE
  • Temporary worsening of heart failure symptoms
  • Severe drop in blood pressure (cardiogenic shock) during or after heart attack
  • Certain heart rhythm disorders (first-degree AV block)
  • Chest pain
  • Tingling sensation (paresthesia)
  • Narrowing of the airways (bronchospasm)
  • Vomiting
  • Skin changes, psoriasis-like rashes
  • Increased sweating
  • Muscle cramps
  • Weight gain
  • Fluid retention in tissues (edema)
  • Depression
  • Impaired concentration
  • Drowsiness
  • Insomnia
  • Nightmares
  • Heart function disorders
  • Abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia)
  • Vision disturbances
  • Dry or irritated eyes
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Feeling of coldness
  • Dry mouth
  • Hair loss
  • Abnormal liver function test values
  • Impotence and other sexual disorders
  • Nervousness
  • Tension
  • Decrease in blood platelets (thrombocytopenia)
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Taste disorders
  • Photosensitivity
  • Worsening of psoriasis
  • Joint pain
  • Tissue death (necrosis) in patients who had severe circulation problems in their arms and/or legs before treatment
  • Liver inflammation
  • Forgetfulness or memory impairment
  • Confusion
  • Hallucinations

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Metoprolol Orion if you are allergic to metoprolol, other beta-blockers, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe heart rhythm problems, a very slow heart rate (under 50 beats per minute), or a problem with your heart's natural pacemaker and no artificial pacemaker.
  • Do not take if your blood pressure is very low (systolic blood pressure below 90 mmHg).
  • Do not take if you have severe asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as it can worsen heart problems.

  • Do not drink alcohol during treatment, as it can increase the medicine's calming effects.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness and tiredness, which may affect your ability to drive or use machines. Be careful, especially if you also drink alcohol or increase your dose.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Significant adverse effects include bradycardia and orthostatic hypotension. Consider potential interactions especially with with drugs affecting the conduction system of the heart. (updated 20.1.2025)
