How to Use

Dosage

For high blood pressure, angina, or irregular heartbeat, typical doses range from 47.5 mg to 190 mg once daily. For heart failure, dosage starts lower and increases gradually.

Method

Take once daily in the morning with water. The 23.75 mg tablet can be divided into equal doses. The 47.5 mg, 95 mg, and 190 mg tablets can be halved only to make swallowing easier, not to divide into equal doses. Do not chew or crush the tablets (or halves); take with liquid.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is generally 190 mg.

  • Tiredness
  • Headache, dizziness
  • Cold hands and feet, slow heart rate, palpitations
  • Shortness of breath during exertion
  • Nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation
RARE
  • Depression, nightmares, difficulty sleeping
  • Tingling sensation
  • Temporary worsening of heart failure symptoms
  • Severe drop in blood pressure during a heart attack, cardiogenic shock in patients with acute heart attack
  • Shortness of breath, worsening of breathing problems
  • Skin allergic reactions
  • Chest pain, fluid retention (swelling), weight gain
  • Decrease in blood platelets
  • Memory problems, confusion, hallucinations, nervousness, anxiety
  • Changes in taste
  • Vision problems, dry or irritated eyes
  • Heart conduction problems, arrhythmias
  • Changes in liver function tests
  • Worsening or onset of psoriasis (a skin condition), light sensitivity, increased sweating, hair loss
  • Impotence (erectile dysfunction)
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Reduced concentration
  • Muscle cramps
  • Eye inflammation
  • Tissue death in patients with severe circulatory disorders
  • Runny nose
  • Dry mouth
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Joint pain

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to metoprolol or other beta-blockers.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, as it can worsen heart failure or increase the risk of a heart attack. Talk to your doctor first.
  • This medicine can cause tiredness and dizziness; do not drive or use machines if you feel these effects.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe heart problems (like very slow pulse, severe heart failure, or heart shock) or severe circulation problems.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you have asthma, diabetes (as this medicine can mask low blood sugar), or are scheduled for surgery requiring anesthesia.
