How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you exactly how much Metoprolol to take.

Method

Take the tablet with a glass of water. You can take it with or without food.

Important

Do not take more than your doctor prescribes. Never take a double dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Tiredness
  • Dizziness, headache
  • Nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, and constipation
  • Slow heart rate, palpitations
  • Low blood pressure when standing up, which can cause dizziness or fainting
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Shortness of breath during exertion
RARE
  • Temporary worsening of heart failure (shortness of breath or swelling), mild heart conduction problems
  • Narrowing of airways (shortness of breath and wheezing)
  • Swelling, chest pain
  • Tingling sensations, muscle cramps
  • Vomiting
  • Weight gain
  • Rash, increased sweating
  • Sleep disturbances (nightmares, drowsiness, insomnia), poor concentration, and depression
  • Heart rhythm disorders, functional heart symptoms
  • Dry mouth
  • Abnormal liver function test results
  • Nervousness, tension
  • Impotence and other sexual dysfunctions
  • Runny nose
  • Vision problems, dry or irritated eyes, conjunctivitis
  • Hair loss
  • Worsening of severe circulation problems in the limbs (symptoms like lack of oxygen, pain, and coldness in fingertips and toes)
  • Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia, can cause easy bruising or nosebleeds)
  • Liver inflammation
  • Joint pain
  • Forgetfulness or poor memory, confusion, hallucinations
  • Ringing in ears, taste disorders
  • Photosensitivity reactions, worsening of psoriasis

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to metoprolol or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take if you have untreated or symptomatic heart failure (shortness of breath, swelling).
  • Do not take if you have a very slow pulse (under 45 beats per minute).
  • Do not take if you have very low blood pressure (systolic/upper pressure below 100 mmHg).
  • Do not take if you have certain heart rhythm problems (2nd or 3rd degree AV block or sick sinus syndrome).

  • Do not take if you have severe circulation problems in your hands or feet (e.g., intermittent claudication or Raynaud's syndrome).
  • Do not take if you have severe obstructive lung disease (e.g., severe asthma or chronic bronchitis).
  • Do not take if you are taking floctafenine.
  • Do not take if you are taking sultopride.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without your doctor's advice, as it can increase the risk of chest pain or heart attack.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Significant adverse effects include bradycardia and orthostatic hypotension. Consider potential interactions especially with with drugs affecting the conduction system of the heart. (updated 20.1.2025)
