How to Use

Dosage

Adults usually receive an initial dose of up to 5 ml (5 mg metoprolol tartrate).

Method

This medicine is given as a slow injection into a vein, while your heart activity and blood pressure are monitored.

Important

If needed, the injection can be repeated every 5-10 minutes until a total dose of 10-15 ml (10-15 mg) is reached.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Fatigue, dizziness, headache
  • Nausea, stomach pain, constipation, or diarrhea
  • Slow heart rate
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Palpitations
RARE
  • Depressed mood, difficulty concentrating, sleep disturbances
  • Allergic rash, itching, increased sweating
  • Dry mouth, vomiting
  • Vision problems, eye irritation, reduced tear production
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Weight gain

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to metoprolol tartrate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe heart problems like a very weak heart or heart failure.
  • Do not use if your heart rate is very slow (less than 50 beats per minute at rest).
  • Do not use if you have very low blood pressure (systolic blood pressure below 90 mmHg).
  • Do not stop this medicine suddenly without your doctor's advice, as it can worsen heart problems or cause a heart attack.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Significant adverse effects include bradycardia and orthostatic hypotension. Consider potential interactions especially with with drugs affecting the conduction system of the heart. (updated 20.1.2025)
