How to Use

Dosage

For pituitary tests: 30 mg per kg for a single dose test, or 500-750 mg every four hours for multiple dose tests. For Cushing's syndrome treatment, the dose is individualized, from 250 mg to 6 g daily.

Method

Take capsules with milk or yogurt, or after a meal.

Important

Maximum 6 grams (24 capsules) per day.

  • Swelling in arms, legs, hands, or feet
  • Bleeding or bruising that lasts longer than usual, blood from gums or nose, or constant tiredness (these can be signs of low blood cells)
  • Low blood potassium
  • Drowsiness or feeling sleepy
  • Low blood pressure
  • Acne
  • Excessive hair growth in unusual places
  • Muscle pain
RARE
  • Abnormal liver function (like high liver enzymes)
  • Low counts of red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets
  • Hair loss
  • Lung infection

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you have Addison's disease or are allergic to metyrapone or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have low hormone levels or liver disease.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are taking glucocorticoids.
  • Metopirone can temporarily lower your cortisol levels; your doctor may give you replacement medicine.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you develop breathing difficulties or fever during treatment.

  • If you take Metopirone for a long time, your blood pressure might increase.
  • Do not use with paracetamol without consulting your doctor.
  • Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding; metyrapone may pass to the baby.
  • Avoid driving or operating machinery if you feel dizzy or drowsy.
  • This medicine contains sodium ethyl parahydroxybenzoate (E215) and sodium propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E217) which may cause allergic reactions.
