How to Use

Dosage

One 47.5 mg tablet or half of a 95 mg tablet, once daily, or as directed by your doctor.

Method

Take once a day with food or on an empty stomach, preferably in the morning. Swallow whole or divided, do not chew or crush. Take with at least 1.5 glasses of water.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 190 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling very tired or dizzy, especially when standing up.
  • Slow pulse, feeling like your heart is beating irregularly or strongly (palpitations).
  • Headache, balance problems.
  • Shortness of breath when exercising.
  • Stomach upset like nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, or constipation.
  • Cold hands and feet.
RARE
  • Temporary worsening of heart failure, chest pain around the heart, or shortness of breath.
  • Tingling sensation on the skin.
  • Narrowing of the airways (difficulty breathing).
  • Vomiting.
  • Skin changes, rash similar to psoriasis, increased sweating.
  • Muscle cramps, weight gain, swelling in body tissues (edema).
  • Feeling sad (depression), trouble focusing, drowsiness, not being able to sleep, bad dreams.
  • Very low blood pressure that can lead to collapse (more likely after a heart attack).
  • Vision problems, dry or irritated eyes, red eyes.
  • Runny nose, dry mouth, hair loss.
  • Impotence or other sexual problems.
  • Feeling nervous or anxious.
  • Low numbers of blood cells (platelets or white blood cells).
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus), hearing problems, changes in taste.
  • Sensitivity to light, worsening or new psoriasis.
  • Joint pain, muscle weakness.
  • Worsening of leg cramps during exercise or Raynaud's disease (cold, numb fingers/toes).
  • Memory problems, confusion, hallucinations, or mood changes.
  • Yellow skin and/or eyes (sign of liver inflammation), tissue death in severe circulation problems.
  • Hidden symptoms of low blood sugar, like a fast heart rate.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to metoprolol or other similar heart medicines (beta-blockers).
  • Do not take if you have severe heart rhythm problems, a very slow pulse (under 50 beats per minute), or very low blood pressure (systolic under 90 mmHg).
  • Do not take if you have severe asthma or a chronic lung disease that causes narrowed airways.
  • If you have diabetes, this medicine can hide the symptoms of low blood sugar, so you should check your blood sugar regularly.
  • Tell your doctor or anesthesiologist that you are taking this medicine before any surgery.

  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can make you feel more tired or dizzy.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as it can be harmful to your heart.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Significant adverse effects include bradycardia and orthostatic hypotension. Consider potential interactions especially with with drugs affecting the conduction system of the heart. (updated 20.1.2025)
