How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe your specific dose, and it is taken only once a week.

Method

The medicine is given as an injection under the skin (subcutaneously) only once a week. Your doctor will advise you on the best day of the week for your injection.

Important

This medicine is taken only once a week; there is no maximum daily dose. Taking too much can be fatal.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Inflammation of the mouth lining, indigestion, nausea, loss of appetite, stomach pain, mouth ulcers, diarrhea.
  • Rash, red skin, itching.
  • Headache, fatigue, drowsiness.
  • Decreased blood cell count (white and/or red blood cells, platelets).
  • Abnormal liver function tests.
RARE
  • Sore throat, gut inflammation, vomiting, pancreas inflammation, black or tarry stools, stomach/intestinal ulcers and bleeding.
  • Sunburn-like reactions (increased skin sensitivity to sunlight), hair loss, increased rheumatic nodules, skin ulcers, shingles, vasculitis, herpes-like rash, hives, increased skin pigmentation, acne, blue spots on skin from bleeding, allergic vasculitis, severe skin rash or blistering.
  • Dizziness, confusion, depression, mood swings, vision disorders, severe headache, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, disorientation, light sensitivity, general muscle weakness, changes in thinking, memory or orientation, seizures, paralysis, numbness or tingling, changes in taste sensation.
  • Pharyngitis, infection (including reactivation of chronic infections), conjunctivitis, lung inflammation.
  • Impaired kidney function, bladder or vaginal inflammation and ulcers, abnormal urination, protein in urine.
  • Pericarditis, fluid accumulation around the heart, cardiac tamponade, low blood pressure, one-sided weakness (stroke), deep vein thrombosis, nosebleeds, lung bleeding.
  • Reduction in all blood cells and platelets, decreased antibody levels in blood, increased number of certain white blood cells, unexpected bleeding (from gums, urine, vomit, bruises).
  • Onset of diabetes, joint pain, muscle pain, reduced bone mass, decreased serum albumin levels, lung fibrosis, shortness of breath and bronchial asthma, fluid accumulation around the lungs, stress fracture, electrolyte disturbances, fever, impaired wound healing, enlarged lymph nodes, lymphoma, tissue damage at injection site, jaw bone damage, decreased libido, impotence, breast enlargement in men, abnormal semen, menstrual cycle disturbances, vaginal discharge.

Important Warnings

  • Take this medicine only once a week. Taking too much can be fatal.
  • Do not use Metoject PEN if you are allergic to methotrexate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to become pregnant (for both men and women, men should avoid conceiving for at least 3 months after treatment).
  • Avoid strong sunlight and do not use a sunbed without your doctor's advice, as this medicine can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
  • Do not receive live vaccines while using Metoject PEN.

  • Contact your doctor immediately if you develop a persistent dry cough, shortness of breath, fever, yellow skin or eyes, severe skin rash, swelling (hands, face, mouth), signs of kidney issues, signs of infection (fever, chills, sore throat), or unusual weakness or bleeding.
  • Keep the pen in a safe place, out of sight and reach of children.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. For the treatment of conditions other than cancer only once weekly. Organtoxic such as kidneys, liver and bone marrow. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Avoid use in severe renal impairment. Consider the numerous potential interactions. Remember blood tests to monitor safety. (updated 6.11.2023)
