How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe the correct dose for you, which is taken once a week.

Method

Metoject PEN is injected under your skin by a doctor, nurse, or yourself if trained, only once a week.

Important

Take this medicine only once a week; taking too much can be very dangerous.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Sores in mouth, indigestion, feeling sick, no appetite, stomach pain.
  • Abnormal liver test results.
RARE
  • Diarrhea.
  • Skin rash, red skin, itching.
  • Headache, feeling tired, feeling sleepy.
  • Fewer blood cells (white, red, or platelets).
  • Sore throat.
  • Bowel inflammation, throwing up, pancreas inflammation, dark stools, stomach or gut bleeding.
  • Sunburn-like skin reactions, hair loss, skin sores, shingles, hives.
  • New diabetes.
  • Dizziness, confusion, feeling sad.
  • Low protein in blood.
  • Fewer blood cells and platelets overall.
  • Bladder or vaginal inflammation, kidney problems, peeing differently or less.
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, less bone mass.
  • Gum inflammation.
  • Darker skin spots, acne, bleeding under skin (bruises, tiny red dots), blood vessel inflammation.
  • Fewer antibodies in blood.
  • Infections (like shingles coming back), red eyes.
  • Mood changes.
  • Vision problems.
  • Inflammation around the heart, fluid around the heart, low blood pressure.
  • Lung scarring (fibrosis), trouble breathing, asthma, fluid around lungs.
  • Bone breaks from stress.
  • Salt imbalance in body.
  • Fever, slow wound healing.
  • Very swollen large intestine.
  • More pigment on nails, nail infections, deep hair infections, visible small blood vessels.
  • Pain, weakness, numbness or tingling, changes in taste (metallic), seizures, paralysis, stiff neck and headache.
  • Worse vision, non-inflammatory eye problems.
  • Less sex drive, impotence, men's breasts getting bigger, abnormal sperm, period changes, vaginal bleeding.
  • Swollen lymph nodes, too many white blood cells (lymphoma).
  • Bleeding from the lungs (coughing up blood or blood-stained phlegm).
  • Yellow skin or eyes (liver damage).
  • Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, feeling faint).
  • Kidney failure symptoms (swollen hands/feet, changes in urination).
  • Infection symptoms (fever, chills, sore throat).
  • Blood clot symptoms (one-sided weakness, leg pain, swelling, redness).
  • Sudden fever, sore throat or mouth, difficulty urinating.
  • Unexpected bleeding (gums, in urine, vomiting, bruising).
  • Severe headache with fever, stiff neck, feeling sick, throwing up, confusion, sensitive to light.
  • Changes in how you think or act, movement problems, memory problems.
  • Severe skin rash or blisters (on skin, in mouth, eyes, genitals).
  • More white blood cells.
  • Nosebleeds.
  • Protein in pee.
  • Feeling weak all over.
  • Jaw bone damage.
  • Skin damage at injection site.
  • Skin redness and peeling.
  • General swelling.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Metoject PEN if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver, kidney, or blood problems.
  • Avoid drinking a lot of alcohol regularly while on this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have a serious infection like tuberculosis, HIV, or other immune system problems.
  • Do not use if you have sores in your mouth, stomach, or intestines.

  • This medicine is not for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Women must avoid getting pregnant during and for 6 months after treatment. Men must avoid fathering a child for at least 3 months after treatment.
  • Do not get live vaccines while taking this medicine, as it can affect your immune system.
  • Tell your doctor if you are elderly, feel weak, or are unwell, as careful monitoring is needed.
  • Tell your doctor if you are dehydrated (lacking fluids).
  • Tell your doctor if you have diabetes and are taking insulin.
  • Avoid strong sunlight and tanning beds; this medicine can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
  • This medicine can cause tiredness or dizziness. Do not drive or operate machines if you feel this way.
  • If you notice new or worsening nerve problems like muscle weakness, vision changes, confusion, or memory issues, contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you cough up blood or bloody phlegm, contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you experience severe diarrhea, stop treatment and tell your doctor.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. For the treatment of conditions other than cancer only once weekly. Organtoxic such as kidneys, liver and bone marrow. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Avoid use in severe renal impairment. Consider the numerous potential interactions. Remember blood tests to monitor safety. (updated 6.11.2023)
