How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the exact dose you need, which is typically given once a week.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection under your skin, usually once a week on the same day.

Important

Do not take this medicine more than once a week. Taking too much can be very dangerous and even fatal.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Mouth inflammation, indigestion, nausea, loss of appetite, stomach pain.
  • Abnormal liver function tests.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Skin rash, redness, itching.
  • Headache, tiredness, drowsiness.
  • Reduced blood cell production (low white or red blood cells and platelets).
  • Persistent dry cough, shortness of breath, and fever (signs of lung inflammation).
RARE
  • Bleeding from the lungs (coughing up blood or bloody mucus).
  • Liver problems (yellow skin/eyes, liver scarring, inflammation, or failure).
  • Severe allergic reactions (skin rash, itching, swelling of face/lips/throat, feeling faint).
  • Kidney problems (swelling in hands/feet/ankles, changes in how often you pee, little or no urine).
  • Serious infections (fever, chills, aches, sore throat, or specific lung infections, blood poisoning).
  • Blood clots (weakness on one side of body, pain, swelling, redness, and warmth in one leg).
  • Very low white blood cell count or bone marrow problems (fever with sore throat/mouth, or trouble peeing).
  • Bleeding problems (bleeding gums, blood in urine, bloody vomit, easy bruising).
  • Brain lining inflammation (severe headache, fever, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, confusion, light sensitivity).
  • Mental and movement changes (changes in thinking, memory, balance problems, personality changes).
  • Severe skin reactions (blisters, peeling skin on skin, mouth, eyes, genitals).
  • Sore throat.
  • Gut issues (inflammation, vomiting, black or tarry stools, stomach/bowel ulcers, bleeding).
  • Skin sensitivity (sunburn-like reactions, hair loss, increased rheumatic lumps, skin ulcers, shingles, inflamed blood vessels, herpes-like rash, hives, increased skin discoloration, acne, blue spots on skin from bleeding).
  • New diabetes.
  • Feeling dizzy, confused, or depressed.
  • Low protein levels in blood.
  • Low levels of all types of blood cells.
  • Bladder or vaginal infections, ulcers, or kidney problems causing abnormal urination.
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, bone loss.
  • Low antibody levels.
  • Eye inflammation (conjunctivitis).
  • Mood changes.
  • Vision problems (blurred vision, non-inflammatory eye disease).
  • Inflammation of the heart sac, fluid around the heart, heart compression due to fluid.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Lung scarring, shortness of breath, asthma, fluid around lungs.
  • Bone fractures from stress.
  • Imbalance of body salts (electrolytes).
  • Fever, slow wound healing.
  • Toxic megacolon (severe widening of the large intestine).
  • Nerve problems (pain, weakness, numbness, tingling, metallic taste, seizures, paralysis).
  • Reproductive problems (decreased sex drive, impotence, breast enlargement in men, abnormal sperm, irregular periods, vaginal discharge).
  • Lymph node enlargement (lymphoma), abnormal growth of white blood cells.
  • Increased number of specific white blood cells.
  • Nosebleeds.
  • Protein in urine.
  • Feeling very weak.
  • Jawbone damage.
  • Damage at injection site.
  • Skin redness and peeling.
  • Swelling.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to methotrexate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have liver disease, severe kidney disease, or blood disorders.
  • Avoid drinking large amounts of alcohol regularly while using this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have a serious infection like tuberculosis, HIV, or other immune system problems.
  • Do not use if you have mouth sores, stomach ulcers, or bowel ulcers.

  • Do not use if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Women must avoid pregnancy during treatment and for 6 months after. Men must avoid fathering a child during treatment and for 3 months after.
  • Avoid live vaccines during treatment.
  • This medicine can make your skin sensitive to sunlight. Avoid strong sunlight and sunbeds, and use sun protection.
  • If you get diarrhea, tell your doctor immediately, as treatment may need to be stopped.
  • If you cough up blood or bloody mucus, contact your doctor right away as it could be a sign of lung bleeding.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. For the treatment of conditions other than cancer only once weekly. Organtoxic such as kidneys, liver and bone marrow. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Avoid use in severe renal impairment. Consider the numerous potential interactions. Remember blood tests to monitor safety. (updated 6.11.2023)
